18 boys in attendance this week which is a marked improvement on the low numbers last week.
It was a grey morning at Marr College but the team were fired up and committed from the first whistle. A strong start was rewarded with a try by Ted in the first minute.
More points quickly followed from tries by Joe, Ted, Dylan (proud dad moment), Korben, Josh, Rhys and Dean who scored his first try on his debut. Welcome and well done!
Toward the end of the second half Carrick gained some composure which slowed our progress on the score board. Unfortunately, they were not rewarded with any points for their efforts.
Thanks to all the parents who turned up to support the team, support from the side-line is a big deal for the boys.
The team had achieved a commanding lead by the halftime whistle, 28-0 (3 points for a try and 1 for a conversion).
During the break the boys were encouraged to pass the ball more during open play. Now that we are playing 15 a side (up from 13 in S1) we have a full scrum of 8 players, our scrummaging during the game was strong, it was great to see our number 8’s picking the ball from the back of the scrum and passing to our scrumhalf.
Following a dominant first half performance we saw great tries from Callum, Ted and Kyle in the second half. We missed out on at least 3 more tries due to dropped balls during backs interplay – we will focus on this in training.
Many strong individual performances. Some committed rucking and tackling but also now that we play 60 minutes (up from 40 minutes in S1), some tired bodies made for missed tackles and slow appearances at the breakdown. A stronger team would have punished us for this.
A special mention for Ted and Korben who both had outstanding games in both attack and defence with Ted scoring 6 conversions.
All in all a top performance and a commanding win.
This week we had 3 joint winners of the chainsaw award (most tackles), well done to Josh, Ted and Harvey, with Dylan and Fraser only 1 tackle behind. The award of Jackal (most turnovers) goes to Cole who was again impressive at the breakdown.
Well done team for another early season win and to Grant for refereeing the game.
QVS will be a tough opponent next week so let’s have a good turnout at training on Wednesday and next Saturday.
