Marr Rugby Vs Birkmyre Rugby

Marr rugby welcomed local neighbours Birkmyre to Marr College playing fields for a club fixture. The conditions were fair and both teams had previously enjoyed very competitive fixtures. The most recent outing for both sides was in a school fixture earlier in the season, with St Columba /Birkmyre winning by four points.

The game began in frantic style with Birkmyre forwards seeking to control possession of the ball and build phases of play. Marr were having real difficulty in retaining the ball, and defended well forcing an error from Birkmyre, a quick tap and go let (LSA) loose to run in from just outside the 22. Almost immediately from the restart, Marr struck again with an excellent finish from (RC). The first half continued in a bruising fashion with some excellent tackles and resilience in defiance by both teams, wrestling for control of the match. As the hooter was about to hoot for the end of the first half, Birkmyre scored a well worked try through several pairs of hands to score just right of the posts.

Birkmyre began the second half motivated to reduce the scoreline and even up the match. This was lead by there forwards imposing themselves with ruthless efficiency to build relentless phases of pressure on the Marr defensive line. The stewardship and marshalling of Birkmyre play was lead by the stand off, with a blend of plays exposing gaps in the Marr defensive line lead to four well worked trys. The challenge for Marr in the remaining 15 mins was to retain the ball and deploy their own attacking threat. The challenge was accepted and lead to an onslaught of activity between both teams 22's, a belligerent run by (AK) fending two players to score under the posts. This was the stimulus for Marr to weave from the restart back up the pitch for (AK) to appear at speed to expose a gap and bring the match to within 2 points. In the remaining 5 minutes of play, Birkmyre controlled the game to seal the win.

An excellent match between two committed and very well drilled teams, however Birkmyre were worthy winners by dominating ball retention and diversity of play in the second half. Marr wish Birkmyre coaches and players every success for the remainder of the season and we look forward to future matches.
