Local derby to begin a New Year

Marr College S2 travelled to local neighbors Wellington for the first fixture of the new year, anticipating a warm welcome and a stern test as Marr had secured league points weeks earlier. The conditions did not support a sense of enthusiasm from the players of both teams or supporters with a desperately cold wind. The game began with concerted pressure applied by Wellington forwards, determined to register the first try. Marr defended well and in particular (HH) making several outstanding tackles to prevent certain trys. Wellington eventually broke through with an athletic leap over the breakdown to score. Marr had not learned from the first try and invited pressure from the Wellington forwards to bulldozer towards the 5m, only for (JH) to make a significant turnover and once passed through several pairs of hands, set loose (BP) on the 22 to break several tackles and run the length of the field to score. A determined Wellington focused on areas of weakness in the Marr defense and not dissimilar to the first try scored again just left of the posts. Marr rallied and took control of the first half by dominating possession, the pressure was telling and just over the half way line, Marr Scrum half (HH) took a quick tap penalty beating several defenders before passing the ball to (AR) who drew in his immediate opponent and passed to center partner (CG) to score right of the posts. An excellent team try to bring the first half to a close.

HALF TIME Wellington (6) Marr (8)

Marr started the second half by introducing players from the bench, who had an immediate impact in maintaining the tempo and domination of possession. It was not long before (DL) scored under the posts after exerting pressure on his opposite number and wrestling the ball to break from halfway to score. Marr in a ruthless mood scored another fantastic team try by stretching the Wellington defense across the pitch and ball passing through many, many pairs of hands executing core skills for (FD) to score in the corner. Wellington were not done yet and provided a quick reply. Marr equally replied with two try's after some fantastic team play and dedication to keep possession, building phases of concerted play, with a sprinkle of (FD) & (AK) magic to score to fine try’s.

The match was played in good spirit by both teams and marshalled well by the Referee encouraging a flowing game. Marr look forward to playing local neighbors Ayr/Wellington in the new season and wish them well for the remainder of this season.

FULL TIME Wellington (9) Marr (22)

Marr MOM (HH)
Marr Magic Moment’s (HH) for several try saving tackles & (BP) fantastic length of the field individual try, (FD) Scorching try coming of his wing to score. (AK) Rampant, physical run dominating collisions to score.
