Marr win local school derby

All were looking forward to the second game for Marr in the new School Conference, a short trip to the home of our local rivals Wellington. Both sides started strongly with Marr getting on the score sheet first with a great run and try by Scott Toner. Wellington replied quickly with a score of their own and took the lead with a successful conversion. Both teams scored another try each in a closely contested opening 20 minutes before Marr finished the half one try to the good after the ball moved quickly through the hands to Logan Cotter on the right wing who used his speed to cross the line.

The Marr captain caught the ball on the restart of the second half and went forward before popping the ball to Scott Rodger who then powered his way through the Wellington defence and scored between the posts. Scott Stirton converted. At times the game got a little too excited resulting in Marr losing their discipline and shape. Marr scored twice more courtesy of Shaun Smith attacking the weakness down the left wing with Scott Stirton successfully converting on both occasions. Marr had been working hard on their defence and this was evident near the end of the game when Wellington battled hard to score. Despite the referee and touch judges having to remind Marr to go back ten metres on more than one occasion, the team held their nerve and stopped Wellington from crossing the try line. The game finished 21-7 to Marr.

A great performance by a Marr team who clearly wanted to win and showed the necessary determination both in attack and, importantly, in defence often stopping the opposition well behind their gain line.
