Marr start Club Conference with a win !

This year has seen the SRU introduce competitive rugby at all age groups from S1 up in both the school and club scene. With byes and holidays the school side has only played one such match so far and on Sunday Marr entertained Ardrossan at Fullarton in the first of seven West U13/U14 Club Conference matches. As there had been no school matches the day before a large number of boys had gathered to do some training and get a run-out in a competitive match.

We met Ardrossan at the Ayrshire 7s in the spring and know they are working hard to grow the game again at a club with a long rugby pedigree. They managed to bring a full side and hopefully their numbers will increase as the season rolls-on.

The match was played over three 20-minute periods with the first two counting towards the conference score. In each period Marr mixed their S1s and S2s. The first period saw Marr start slowly but eventually cross the line before repeating the trick five more times to come away 20-0 up. However, in the 2nd period Marr often forgot they were still in a match and some very poor tackling combined with good weaving and running saw Ardrossan score two tries so that Marr only edged the 2nd period 16-7. Match score 36-7.

The final period saw Marr’s greater numbers and fresher legs tell as they ran in seven tries which were all converted for a 28-0 win thus making it 64-7 on the day. The match finished a minute early due to a shoulder injury to the Ardrossan scrum-half but later reports confirmed it as soft tissue damage and hopefully he will be playing again in a couple of weeks.

Full credit to Ardrossan, not once did their heads go down or did they seem despondent. They have some great players and we wish them well for the season. For Marr there will be harder matches to come and there is still much work to be down at securing the ball, especially at the rucks, and making all tackles count.

Tries: Cameron M (2), S1 Guest (6), Andrew R, Scott S (2), Cameron P, Scott T, Kieran, Shaun (2), Scott G
Conversions: Scott S (5), Scott G, Andrew R (2), S1 Guest (5)
