Marr secure victory with dominant performance

With a number of players unavailable due to the Murrayfiled international and other commitments the eighteen remaining squad members travelled through to Strathaven for their final club U18 league match.
Once the referee was able to free up the pea in his ‘acme thunderer’ the game kicked off. Marr dominated possession but the referee was perhaps over zealous in preventing any sort of drive in the scrum with ‘hold the push’ his watchword for the day.
Marr struggled to gel as a team in the first half with lack of support in both clearing rucks and in support running being the main issues. However Marr still scored two first half tries through Kyle McCulloch and Andrew McDonald with Gregor Beckwith successful with one of the conversions to give a score of 12-0 at the break.
Marr opened the second half with greater resolve, concentrating on making sure of the basics and protecting ball at the breakdown. After a period of pressure prop Isaac Renucci breenged over for a try converted by Beckwith. Good handling then provided Evan Light with the space to score in the corner with Beckwith adding the two points.
Roddy Fell then provided support to score try number five after a run from O‘Leary. Beckwith again converted. 33-0 to Marr.
Marr then won a turnover in their own 22. The back row of Kyle McCulloch, Liam Morrison and Roddy Fell all carried forward before releasing the backs and this time Ryan Brown had the pace to run through for an unconverted try. A loose kick from Strathaven was run back at them and Scott McDonald powered over for another unconverted score.
To their credit Strathaven never gave up and after a period of pressure a quick tap penalty enabled them to go over in the corner for a consolation score. There was still time for Liam Morrison to barge over from close range for a try converted by Beckwith to make the final score 50-5.
Marr improved massively in the second half and deserved this victory. It took them a while to gel as a team but scored some excellent tries in the second half. Playing two teams each weekend has not been without its challenges but it has been great to provide the opportunity for the 38 squad members to have regular game time. Thanks to the parents for supporting the boys and providing lifts to the matches.
