Dominant U18s maintain unbeaten league record

Marr U18s had the opportunity to put aside the disappointment of the midweek defeat against Dollar in the top of the table clash against the other unbeaten team, Lomond.

Early penalties against Marr put them on the back foot but their defensive line held firm. They then scored what would be up there as one of the tries of the season. A lineout was won on their own line. Good carries by Mackenzie Smith and Kyle McCulloch gained valuable ground before the ball was released to the backs, Accurate passing put Matthew O’Leary into space and he had the speed to get over the try line for the first score. Gregor Beckwith kicked the conversion.

From the restart a strong run by Brown took play up to the 10 metre line. Lomond then gave away a penalty and from the resultant lineout Marr drove at the Lomond line. A scrum was then awarded and Smith went over after a pick up from no. 8 Murray Blair.. Beckwith added the two points. 14- 0 to Marr.

Evan Light was next on the score sheet after a breakout from their own half released him and he had the speed to go over for try number three. Beckwith converted. 21- 0.

Shortly after Marr were reduced to fourteen men after a player was sent off for expressing his displeasure at a refereeing decision. Lomond then scored their only try of the match when a loose Marr kick hit off a player and Lomond gathered and ran in for a converted try.

Despite being a man down Marr continued to dominate territory and possession and their defensice line remained strong. Ethan Reilly went over just before half time for another try converted by Beckwith. 28-7. There was still time for Reilly to score his second to make the half time score 33-7.

From the restart the ball was fed back to Beckwith who drilled a kick into the corner which was guddled into touch by the Lomond full back. From the lineout Reilly went over for his hat trick. 38-7.

Murray Blair and Evan Light then provided strong carries and passing between each other before Blair released Light to go over for his second try. Beckwith regained his kicking touch and added the two points. A turnover on the half way released Reilly and as he was tackled just short of the line Scott Toner was in support to take the scoring pass. Beckwith knocked over the conversion.

The final score came from Beckwith who ran in from 3o metres after a good carry and offload by Liam Morrison. Beckwith added the conversion to his own try to make the final score 59-7.

Any blues were well and truly blown away in this convincing display. Marr now know that victory next week at home against local rivals Wellington/Ayr will see them crowned champions of the U18 Conference league. If you’re not heading up to Dundee to watch the firsts come along on Saturday morning to support the 18s, 10am kick off.
