U18s maintain unbeaten record

Marr U18s entertained Queen Victoria School at the school playing fields this weekend. Those of a certain age will remember being entertained by the QVS pipe band prior to Murrayfield internationals. However today it was Marr who called the tune.

From the kick off the home team showed some excellent support work in attack and defence. An early break by Scott McDonald failed to produce a try. After a period of pressure QVS were able to clear their lines to the Marr twenty two. However O'Leary was able to counterattack and good ruck ball released Evan Light to go over for Marr's first score. Beckwith added the two points. 7-0.

Marr contined to press the QVS line, despite playing into the wind in the first half, and from a scrum five No. 8 Murray Blair drove over for try number two. Beckwith again was successful with the conversion.

Good handling by the backs then allowed O'Leary to go over for try number three before Ryan Brown provided excellent support play following a Jamie Drummond 40 metre charge to score try number four. Ethan Reilly then went in for Marr's fifth try after the forwards won lineout ball against the throw.

Captain Kyle McCulloch then went over after good midfield pressure and Beckwith scored Marr's seventh supporting another break by Reilly. Beckwith kicked the extras for all the tries which made the half time score 49-0.

Marr introduced all their subs at the start of the second half. Despite the changes Marr contined to dominate and Jack Bray found himself in space to score on the right. Sean Nicol then scored on the left from a five metre scrum after Marr were held up over the line. Beckwith maintained his 100 per cent kicking record adding the two points for both tries and making the score 63-0. The referee blew up at this point for full time.

A lot of positives with some excellent support play. Nine tries from nine different players. However things still to work on ahead of the re-arranged cup match with Grange on Wednesday – discipline and penalty count have to be addressed and clear out work at the breakdown needs to be tightened up. But the pluses certainly outweigh the minuses with great squad numbers at training and a desire from the boys to get better. Grange on Wednesday in the Cup. Next weekend the school has no match due to the mid term but the U18s do have a club fixture away to Stewartry.
