Ayrshire quarter final awaits Under 18s

Marr U18s made the long trip to Kingussie to play Kingussie High School with a quarter final spot in the School Plate tournament on offer.

Despite the length of time in the bus Marr started brightly. Early pressure allowed Marr to kick a penalty into the corner and from the lineout they set up a driving maul with Reilly then diving over for the first score. The conversion was successful and Marr had an early 7 - 0 lead.

Despite the length of time in the bus Marr started brightly. Early pressure allowed Marr to kick a penalty into the corner and from the lineout they set up a driving maul with Reilly then diving over for the first score. The conversion was successful and Marr had an early 7 - 0 lead.

Marr continued to play with a greater intensity than Kingussie and won turnover ball on numerous occasions. They also did not allow Kingussie any time to put defence lines in place with Keir MacDougall getting the attack moving quickly with quick tap penalties. From two of these Evan Light scored a brace with a further try by Grant Paterson. Paterson was also successful with one of the conversion atttempts. Just before half time Marr gathered the ball from the restart and with good hands and support play went the length of the pitch for O'Leary to touch down under the posts for a converted try to make the half time score 31-0.

Marr's defence had been sound and had restricted Kingussie to living on scraps, However Marr had also butchered a number of try scoring opportunities and needed to be more clinical in their finishing.

The second half was much the same as the first with Marr dominating possession and territory. The bak row was in rampant form and the five second half tries were scored by them with Mackenzie Smith (2), Kyle McCulloch (2) and Rollo Press the scorers. The referee blew for full time with the final score being 58-0.

Credit to Kingussie who never gave up but do not get the opportunity of developing their rugby skills in a match situation on a regular basis. It's just as well that we weren't playing them at shinty.

Job done but as Marr now face Ardrossan Schools in the quarter final they know that they will have to eliminate some basic errors and make sure of taking any scoring opportunities that come their way.

Marr next match isagainst Lenzie Academy at the Marr playing fields at 10am on Saturday morning before the double header on Tuesday 7th November when the U18s play Ardrossan Schools at 2pm following which the U16s entertain Dunbar Grammar in their Shield quarter final.
