Marr U18s go out of Cup

Marr Under 18s travelled to Biggar for the second round of the Schools Cup. Biggar, having won the toss, elected to play with the wind and soon put Marr under early pressure. However a break from their own 22 allowed Marr's O'Leary space to run in the first score which was converted by Paterson.

Biggar came straight back and with their stand off kicking for position put Marr under pressure again. A missed tackle allowed Biggar through for a converted try, levelling the score at 7- 7. Biggar then scored again capitalising on a spilled ball by Marr. 12-7 to Biggar.

The Biggar stand off was controlling the game and varied his kicking and running game well. Another converted try came Biggar's way before O'Leary flicked up a loose pass with his foot into his hand to run in his second try from 40 metres. The conversion was successful and made the half time score 19-14 to Biggar.

The second half started brightly for Marr and early second half pressure resulted in a try for Ethan Reilly. The successful conversion put Marr in the lead again 21-19. A loose pass by Marr was then capitalised on by Biggar. The stand off kicked through and as he went for the score was blocked. Penalty try. Biggar now in the lead 26-21.

Marr put the Biggar defence under pressure again and from a tighthead strike on the 5m line number 8 Rollo Press went over for a converted try. 28-26 now to Marr. With minutes to play Marr conceded two soft scores. First from a free kick the Biggar scrum half broke quickly and fed the stand off who ran through some lacklustre tackling from half way for a converted try. Then Marr failed to defend a kick to the corner. Biggar picked up the loose ball and went over again making the final score 38-28 to Biggar.

The pervading feeling after the match was of immense disappoinmtent by thre team who had failed to execute their game plan and control the ball. Biggar were stuffy and had the player of the match in their number 10. We wish them well in the next round. For Marr we will continue in one of the lesser tournaments. With the right attitude the opportunity is still there to progress far and challenge for some silverware.
