Marr learn from Murrayfield mistakes

Marr U18s entertained Lomond School on a Saturday with the opportunity to avenge the Murrayfield cup final defeat in December. Marr started brightly and held the early ascendency. Lomond however came back into the game and had a period of pressure on the Marr line. Good defence allowed Marr to clear their lines and shortly after O'Leary found a gap and ran through for Marr's first score. Beckwith was unlucky with the conversion, hitting the upright from wide out.

Lomond came straight back and after a number of phases and missed tackles by Marr scored close to the posts for a converted try. 7 -5 to the visitors. An excellent restart kick allowed the Marr forwards to win the ball and good hands provided space for the days captain, Kyle McCulloch to score an unconverted try. 10 -7 to Marr which remained the score at half time.

Marr made wholesale changes at half time allowing a number of the under 16 squad to turnout for the first time for the 18s. The coaches had been pleased with the intensity and commitment shown in the first half and it was great to see the level being maintained throughout the match.

A lovely backs move after scrum ball won allowed full back Ryan Brown to burst through a gap for Marr's third try. Beckwith was successful with the conversion. 17-7 in Marr's favour.

Marr's final try came from turnover ball won on the half way line after a big hit from hooker Sam Butchart. The ball was moved quickly and Nathan Headland ran through to score. Man of the match Beckwith was again successful with the conversion to make the final score 24 -7.

There was some excellent play considering the lack of match opportunities due to the weather and cancellation of matches. Marr finished the match with a team made up entirely of fourth and fifth year players, with only three sixth years involved in the match at all, so todays result and display gives everyone cause for optimism for the next season. The futures bright.
