Positive despite the defeat

Marr Under 18 used this friendly against Glasgow Academy to allow all their squad players some much needed game time after the October holidays. It also allowed the coaches to view all the players before selecting a squad for the Plate match this coming Wednesday.

Marr have a young squad with only six sixth year pupils out of the squad of 26 who played this weekend. However the Marr players fronted up well against the more mature Glasgow Academy players and generally held their own. The main difference though was how the opposition moved the ball quickly and accurately to their strong and quick wingers and most of the scores conceded came down the flanks.

Marr's one score came from a 'catch and drive' lineout, particularly pleasing as this had been worked on at training the previous week. Sam Butchart was credited with the score. Further scores could have been forthcoming from Marr but were denied by the referee.

Despite the apparent one-sided scoreline there were positives from this friendly. Playing against this quality of opposition every week would undoubtedly help the squad to improve and play consistently at the level of intensity required. Scott Rodger, Nathan Headland and Gregor Beckwith, promoted from the Under 16 squad, all had their moments and selection for the match on Wednesday against Kingussie will be interesting.
