Morrisons win top of table clash
Marr lose out to Morrisons
In blustery conditions Marr U18s hosted Morrisons Academy in a top of the table clash. Marr started brightly with the forwards keeping control of the ball. However, a loose pass, after the ball was released to the backs allowed Morrisons to hack on ahead and score a converted try against the run of play.
The Marr forwards continued to have the asecendency in the loose though the set piece lineout and scrummaging were not up their ususal standard. Despite having the benefit of the crosswind being slightly in their favour Morrisons preferred to run the ball than kick it for territorial advantage. This eventually resulted in their second try when, after a powerful run by their left winger the ball was moved to the right and an unconverted try resulted in the right corner to make the half time score 12-0.
With the wind advantage in the second half Marr were still in this match but a series of wrong decisions and penalties allowed Morrisons to dictate the play for the first ten minutes of the half. Grant Paterson moved from full back to stand off after an injury to Nicholl and it was Paterson who scored after ball won from a 5 metre scrum. The conversion was missed but there was now only one score in it at 12-5.
The rest of the half was fairly even with both teams having chances. However Morrisons finally scored a third try in the right corner after ball was stolen at a lineout. A great kick from the touchline ended the scoring at 19-5 in Morrisons favour.
It was disappointing to lose this Conference match but the U18s still have a real chance of progressing in the SRU Plate. Training will continue over the October holidays and Marr then resume their fixtures with a friendly against Glasgow Academy on the 28th October.
