Comfortable win against Balfron/Strathendrick

Marr U18s travelled through to Fintry on Saturday morning to play Balfron/Strathendrick in the fifth round of their Conference fixtures. Unfortunately, we arrived to be told that the game would have to be a development match as the opoosition only had ten players. The one benefit of this was that Marr offered five players (which were rotated) to Balfron meaning that more players got game time.

Marr started the game in the ascendency and after a period of pressure Rollo Press went over for the first try with Nicholl converting to give Marr a 7-0 lead. Marr continued to press and after a scrummage strike against the head no.8 Press picked up and fed his fellow back row colleague Mackenzie Smith for try number two. 12-0.

The Marr forwards had a firm grip on the game. From another ruck, Murray Blair became the third member of the back row to score a try after picking the ball up and driving straight through the defensive line. Nicholl was successful with the conversion to increase Marr's lead to 19-0.

O'Leary then made a lovely break on the outside. Unfortunately he misjudged the try line but Ryann Elliot followed up to score the touchdown and extend Marr's lead to 24-0.

All the play continued to be in the Balfron half. Balfron tried to spread the ball from their own twenty two but the ball was turned over. Another good carry by Blair created the space for Press to score his second try. Paterson kicked the conversion to make the half time score 31-0.

The second half started in similar vein. A good move to the blind side allowed space for Keir Gaw to score. Paterson was again successful with kicking the extra two points. From the restart Press broke through the defece and offloaded to O'Leary who ran in to score. The successful conversion extended Marr's lead to 45-0.

To Balfron's credit they came back at Marr and had a period of pressure which eventually culminated in an unconverted try. 45-5. Marr however had the final say and from a scrum the ball was moved and Paterson scored a try. The kick was successful which brought the final score to 52-5 in Marr's favour.

Next weeks match will be a far sterner encounter as we entertain Morrisons Academy in a top of the table clash at the school playing fields at 10.30am. If you would like to whet your appetite before the senior squad play Ayr in the afternoon please come along and support the boys.
