10 out of 10 for S1 !

It’s been a wee while since an S1 match report appeared, so here are two matches in one report !

On Saturday Feb 21st Marr College hosted Kelvinside Academy in a reverse of the fixture on 4th October that we lost 20-14. There have been a lot of matches and much training since then so it would be interesting to see how things have progressed (or not!).

Right from the off Marr took the game to Kelvinside and if there was one noticeable difference between the 2 sides it was that the whole Marr team appeared up for the game while only half of the Kelvinside team appeared interested in putting in the work required.

Marr moved the ball well and defended whenever necessary to run-out 34-4 winners, a marked difference to our last meeting. The 9 tries came from Shaun Smith (4), Scott Toner, Cameron Paterson (2), Harry Murray and Calum Morton with Harry getting 4 conversions and Scott Stirton 3

The following Saturday (28th February) we played Jordanhill School, also at home.

The tone for the game was set right from the off as Scott Toner broke 2 tackles to score in the first minute. Thereafter there was a steady flow towards the Jordanhill line as Marr ran in more tries. However towards the end of the 1st half we showed our defensive qualities as we held up a Jordanhill attack on our try line.

An early score in the second half was followed by a sustained period of Jordanhill pressure which, despite several defensive stands on our own line, eventually resulted in a Jordanhill score.

Normal service was restored with Marr running in another 6 scores before the end.

The final score was 51-4. Marr’s 15 tries came from Scott Toner (2), Cameron Mackenzie, Harry Murray (3), Cameron Paterson, Thomas, Scott Rodger (2), Logan Cotter 94) and Blair. Harry slotted 6 conversions.

Speaking to the Jordanhill coaches afterwards they were very complimentary of our organisation and defensive structure which they consistently struggled to break down. To their credit, Jordanhill never ever looked like giving up and played rugby right to the final whistle despite the score. Referee and Modern Apprentice Kyle praised the boys for their offloading ability and all these positives are something we need to take forward over the next few weeks.

The win over Jordanhill takes the School A team and Club Midi side to a total of 10 consecutive wins; no mean feat and shows how we have expanded from a team of 13 individual players to a squad of over 20 players all of whom can come in and cover for the injuries and absences that occur across the season.

There will be far harder tests to come, starting this Saturday with the visit of Hutchesons, but the boys should reflect how far they have come and how much they have improved since September. No matter what happens between now and the end of the season they have much to be proud of in S1.
