All systems Purple and Gold for Murrayfield - Target 2 achieved

After winning the Barbarian Conference in the Mitsubishi Motors Schools & Youth Conferences 2017/18, Marr College’s season just got better with pre-season Target 2 being doubly achieved after the U16s and U18s won their respective semi-finals in the Schools’ Cup competitions.

First through on Tuesday were the U18s. The College 1st XV travelled to play Trinity Academy and emerged winners 5-7 in a close fought content. See match report here.

Twenty-four hours later the U16s were in action away to Lasswade High School. Out-playing a big and very physical side Marr emerged winner 23-54. See match report here

This takes both sides to the finals to be played on Wednesday 6 December at Murrayfield (back pitches).

The U16s will play against Earlston High School in the National Schools U16 Shield. Earlston is the main feeder school for Melrose and their youth teams also play under the Melrose Wasps and Melrose Rugby Community banners. The U16’s have some parents with a notable rugby pedigree who help in coaching…a certain Mr G Townsend and Mr D Weir, whose respective off-spring are being tagged as future stars at senior level.

The U18s will play Lomond/Helensburgh. Both sides were in the same Conference and ended the season on the same point level with Marr in second spot ahead of Lomond/Helensburgh simply on points scored/conceded differential. By quirk of fate a waterlogged pitch at Lomond meant they didn’t actually play each other during the season and the points were shared. Therefore there’s no direct recent form from the sides playing each other…however the compare results against other sides they both played makes some interesting reading. It’s fair to say that this will be another very close contest between two equally matched and determined teams.

A feast of rugby action awaits those who choose to follow the Purple and Gold path to Murrayfield. This is the first time Marr College has had two age group finalists in the same season so this milestone becomes another chapter in Marr Rugby history.

The future is bright…
