Missed opportunities cost Marr dear

Marr travelled to take Glasgow looking to take the scalp of Schools Cup Finalists. In perfect conditions for running rugby the game kicked off. However it was the defences of both teams that were to be dominant throughout the game.

St Aloysius opened the scoring when, after a penalty was kicked to the corner, a period of sustained pressure produced a try for their second row from a neat reverse pass from the scrum half. The conversion was successful. 7-0 to St Aloysius.

Marr then had a period in the opposition half and similar to their opponents score a penalty was kicked to the corner, and after a number of charges Marr’s second row Cameron Mackenzie crashed over for a try converted by Gregor Beckwith. All square.

St Aloysius then re-took the lead after a number of pick and go’s close to the Marr line. The conversion was added to extend their lead to 14-7. This remained the score at half time. Defensively Marr had been good but too many unforced errors, dropped passes, knock ons, wrong options had cost Marr dear. Despite this they were still in the game.

The second half however was almost a re-run of the first with defences in the ascendency and Marr invariably taking the wrong options. St Aloysius went back to the strength of their heavy pack and went over for another converted try after numerous pick and go’s to increase their lead to 21-7.

Marr didn’t give up and eventually Marr scored after Cameron Mackenzie burst through and offloaded to Isaac Renucci who went over. With time running out Beckwith missed with a rushed conversion.

Shortly after the whistle went for full time. Marr will rue the missed opportunities with a number of scores left out on the pitch. They have the chance to make amends next week when they take part in an invitation tournament at the Oriam playing against the top club and school teams in Scotland. Marr are in a group with fellow school team Stewarts Melville and top club side Boroughmuir, and Granite City.
