Marr grind out win over local rivals

The Marr U18s played their first match of 2019 at the College playing fields against Wellington/Ayr. With a number of players making their debuts for the club 2nd XV in the afternoon this match provided the opportunity for a number of squad players to gain some valuable game time and allow the coaches to see their potential.

In blustery conditions there was not a lot to write about the first half with the forwards unable to provide front foot ball or clearing out rucks and the backs lying too flat. Just before half time Josh Affleck showed a good step to create space and go through for the only score of the half which was converted by Calum Inglis.

Probably Nessie’s shortest ever team talk at half time, which was certainly to the point, seemed to have the desired effect, albeit it was Ayr who scored first from early pressure from the kick off. A good conversion from wide out levelled the score at 7-7.

Marr then started to get the upperhand. Macdougall fielded a loose kick and passed to Scott Toner who charged forward. Another couple of carries released Keir Macdougall who went over in the corner for an unconverted try. Shortly after a kick ahead by Inglis took play close to the Ayr line. Marr regained the ball and Cameron Mackenzie went through for try number three. Inglis added the two points.

Scott Rodger was then unlucky not be awarded a try from a well worked lineout move but from the resulting scrum Scott Mcdonald hit a good line to score Marr’s fourth try, converted by Sean Nicol to increase Marr’s lead to 26-7.

The final score went to No. 8 Josh Affleck who picked up from the base of the score and galloped through a massive gap for a converted try bringing the final score to 33-7 in Marr’s favour.

A good response in the second half by the squad but lots to work on as we continue with friendlies over the coming weeks.
