Marr Under 18s took on Ayr at Fullarton on Saturday in the West Youth Cup, hoping to reverse a heavy defeat at Ayr at the start of the season. That didn’t look likely, in fact it looked like more of the same, when Ayr crossed to score early on and followed that with another two tries to take it to 17-0 half way through the first half. Marr were low in confidence and were finding it hard to get a foothold in the game but shortly before half time they made a breakthrough when Alasdair Campbell broke through and survived a high tackle to score Marr’s first try. He converted it to make it 17-7 at half time.

Ayr scored first in the second half but Marr were playing with more determination and more belief. Andrew Bowler went over wide on the right to score their second, which Campbell converted. Then a penalty from Campbell cut the deficit to 7 points.

Marr had the momentum now and when Ruari Anderson chased a kick by Campbell and gathered to score and Campbell converted, the match was all square at 24-24.

It wasn’t to be though. A kick from Campbell in Marr’s 22 was charged down and Ayr scored with only minutes to go, followed by another with no time to restart and it finished 36-24 to Ayr.

It was certainly a vast improvement on the last meeting but unfortunately not quite enough.
