Troon kids getting a taste of Rugby.

Club Development Officer Colin Sturgeon had a busy time in September as he rolled out his new Primary School Program to all six Marr Cluster Primary Schools. The block was aimed at Primary 5 kids with each school receiving 4 weeks of Touch Rugby coaching which was then concluded with a Festival hosted at Marr College.

Colin was supported in the delivery of the sessions by a number of Marr College sports leaders who in August completed the Introduction to Rugby Coaching course which Colin and Ewan Bulger delivered. A number of these leaders are also members of the Marr College U18 Rugby squad so bring with them plenty of experience. The program provides these leaders with the opportunity to get hands on coaching experience and allows them to give back to their former Primary school.

Following the 4 week block we hosted a Festival at Marr College which was attended by all six schools, this provided the kids with an opportunity to show off the skills they had been working on in a competitive environment and test themselves against players from other schools. The sports leaders were again on hand to assist with the coaching of teams and refereeing of matches which allowed us to have more than 180 kids at the event.

This new program will see us deliver 4 weeks of Rugby followed by a Festival/Tournament to every child from Primary 4-7 in the Troon Cluster. Our next block will be targeted at Primary 6 kids and starts after the October break.

The club is already seeing the benefits of this new initiative with our Primary squad having an influx of new players. Should anyone be interested in giving Marr Rugby a try please contact Mini Convener Paul Gillespie:
