Peter was born on 16th April 1943 and raised in Troon, attending Marr College where he was first introduced to rugby. Growing up in a sporting family, with father Jock coming from a footballing background before moving onto rugby, and brothers John and Gordon, Peter and his brothers benefitted from their fathers coaching and encouragement. The footballing influence and skills from this were transferred from the round to the oval game as all three boys took up playing rugby while attending Marr College.
PC’s abilities and promise were quickly recognised and on leaving school he embarked on a rugby journey that saw him play senior club rugby for West of Scotland and then after moving to the east of Scotland with Gala. Representative honours were part of this playing career and he was capped 27 times for Scotland between 1964 and 1973, with 10 of those appearances as captain. This period included five memorable wins against the “Auld Enemy”. In 12 of these matches he played alongside his brother Gordon. PC played at No.8 and his footballing prowess saw him take on the role of goal kicker. He had a unique but effective style, and an international haul of 67 points made him Scotland’s highest-scoring forward of all-time.
Following the end of his playing career, PC remained actively involved in rugby as a referee, coach and mentor and as an administrator ,with a particular forte in the discipline side of the game.
At heart Peter was a Gala man through and through, but he never forgot his roots. Whilst he never played senior rugby for Marr he remained in close contact with the club and had a strong and warm affiliation, attending many matches as a supporter, as well as offering advice and guidance and on occasions speaking at club functions. PC proudly sported his Marr Rugby club tie whenever supporting Marr. His brother John, who remained in Troon and who played senior rugby for Marr sadly passed away in 2024. Gordon sadly passed away in 2001.
Despite being based in the East, Peter sustained firm friendships with many of his contemporaries from his time growing up in Troon and from his regular returns to the West.
PC loved rugby and was an infectious character who helped bring out the best in people.
All at Marr Rugby pass on heartfelt condolences to Peter’s wife Jill and the rest of the family. He will be sadly missed but his contribution to rugby will never be forgotten.
