We welcome four new faces to the squad ahead of the 2023/24 season.
Ali Rogers - Prop - 20yrs
Ali has already made 3 appearances for the Marr 1st XV whilst allocated through the academy/Ayrshire Bulls last winter, but has now agreed to join the club full time for the 2023/24 season. Ali started rugby back in 2015 at Auchinleck Academy whilst also playing at Cumnock RFC and went on to play for Glasgow and The West Academy where he captained Scotland Schools U16s tour to Japan in 2019. Ali then joined Glasgow Hawks when he left school and was given an academy contract at Glasgow Warriors. Ali was selected for the Scotland U20s, making his debut against Wales and going on to win 9 caps for the U20s. During this period Ali joined the Ayrshire Bulls before making the short move to Marr for the upcoming season.
Alex Apthorpe - Prop / Back Row - 24yrs
Alex has made the short move from Cumnock to Marr this season after playing in the red & black jersey for five years. Alex moved to Scotland from his home town Inverell in NSW, Australia back in 2018 but before doing so picked up the Australian rugby championship title with NSW. Alex was also part of the title winning Cumnock side when they won their league in 2021/22. We are all looking forward to Alex developing under Stephen Adair and showcasing what he has to offer in the 2023/24 season.
Callum Smith - Back Row - 31yrs
Callum joins us from Wigtownshire after helping their club to the first promotion in 25yrs and winning the Player of The Season and Top Try Scorer award for their 1st XV. Callum started his rugby at Carrick Academy and played through to seniors where he was part of one of the most successful Carrick sides winning three National Shields in a row, picking up two tries and a MOTM performance in the third final. Callum also had spells at both Dumfries and Moray in-between playing at Carrick and Wigtownshire, so has a wealth of experience to bring to the side.
Robbie Baird - Scrum Half - 18yrs
Robbie joins Marr this season straight from leaving Hutchesons' Grammar School. Robbie has played his rugby at Hutchesons’ and GHA all his life but has recently being picked up by the U18s academy. Robbie was selected as part of the U18s Scotland 7s Commonwealth Games team. Robbie is great prospect and we hope he develops & thrives in our environment whilst working alongside Grant Baird and Kenny Diffenthal.
We wish all the new signings the best of luck in the purple & gold this season
