Match Report
Comfortable win for Marr.
The long awaited return of Marr 1st XV in the Tennent’s Premiership happened last Saturday with a 46 points to 16 score line.
With a large home crowd of nearly 500 souls eagerly awaiting some rugby like Marr produced against Jed last week ,were left somewhat disappointed with a stop start match, where Referee Tom French awarded over 30 penalties, [to be fair to him the penalties were evenly spilt].
Both head coaches will be reviewing the video footage to work out why their penalty count has more than doubled, or was it the referee depiction of the match was different to theirs?
Marr kicked off into a stiff blustery breeze and immediately showed some good rucking and mauling as they drove towards the ‘Burgh’ line.
It was actually Musselburgh who opened the scoring when Paul Cunningham converted a fine penalty form more than 40 metres out.
Marr quickly answered back with a trademark try from a 5 metre scrum, when Marr’ wing forward Mackenzie Pearce was unstoppable from the back of the resulting rolling maul.
Captain Conor Bickerstaff was next on the scoresheet after Marr’s forwards were pressing the away sides line, Conor spotted a gap to nip through and touchdown between the sticks.
Musselburgh then added a further penalty to reduce the Marr lead.
With Musselburgh now reduced to fourteen players after their stand-off was yellow carded for deliberate knock on, Marr took full advantage sending Marr winger Richard Dalgleish over in the corner, after creating a nice overlap.
The referee then evened the sides out by giving the Marr stand-off ten minutes on the naughty step for continual infringements.
Musselburgh took advantage of this, scoring a good try in the corner by their most impressive fullback Sweeney.
Half time score 19-11.
Now with the advantage of the ‘two club wind’ [golfing term] behind them. Marr’s powerful pack started to show dominance, allowing scrum half Jack Preston to dart between two players to score close to the posts.
Next on the score sheet was Marr centre Gregor Paxton, who sprinted through the away teams defence.
Musselburgh were now well down, but not out, when their winger Gregor Tait intercepted a loose pass to run 60 metres for a good consolation try.
With fifteen minutes left Marr now brought on most of their replacements and it was Iosefo Turaga who found some space out wide to score Marr’s final try in the corner that Colin Sturgeon did well to convert.
With the final score 43 -16 Marr head coach was relatively happy with this ‘average’ performance, with a few aspects of Marr play to work on.
Musselburgh can hold their heads high. They stuck to their task with great gusto and never gave up. They know they have a few players to come back into the fold to bolster their squad.
