Marr Rugby update: Club Captain appointment - Gold medal winner and Olympian helping take Marr Rugby to new heights!

Marr Rugby is delighted to announce that the adult players have selected Jim McNiven to become the new Club Captain, following in the footsteps of Gregor Ness who has stepped down from this post due to work commitments.

Jim only joined Marr Rugby after his family moved to Troon in 2017 but quickly has become a well established and influential figure in the club.

At a sprightly 56 years of age he brings a wealth of experience to the club and his background is phenomenal. He got into rowing at an early age and this became a sporting passion that saw him represent the British Army, Scotland and Great Britain. In 1994 he was part of the GB team that won the gold medal at the World Rowing Championships in Indianapolis with the lightweight men's eight and two years later he took part in the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta.

He returned to playing rugby in 2001, playing for a local club in Nottingham. Work opportunities saw Jim and his family relocate to Troon in 2017 . He joined Marr Rugby and quickly established himself as a key figure in the 3rd XV squad.

As a high performance athlete and with his experience in the services Jim has natural leadership and other qualities that he has brought to add to the Marr family. Still an active player with the 3rd XV he sets out standards for the younger players to follow and he has been a driving force in the improvements the team has made.

As Club Captain he will be the adult players representative on the club's management group and be an integral player in helping our plans for continuous improvement.

Stephen Allam, Marr rugby club president said - "We thank Gregor Ness for the work he has done and know that he will continue to support the club, and we wish him well in his career. Whilst he was always going to be a hard act to follow we are delighted that Jim has stepped forward to undertake this important role. The work he has already done is great and we know there is much more to come as we aim to make Marr Rugby the best club in Scotland. Jim has exceptionally high standards , much to offer, and will be a key figure as we move forward and we very much welcome him to becoming part of the club's management team."

Marr Rugby's season at senior level for 2021/2022 concluded with the 1st XV becoming Tennent's Premiership champions and the 3rd XV winning West Reserve League 3. If you are interested in playing or coaching for Marr rugby at any level or finding out more about the club please contact us HERE.
