Marr Rugby Round Up (7.9.2024): Mixed Day

Marr Rugby Senior Results (7.39.2024)

Premiership (1s): Hawick RFC 51 - Marr Rugby 13
Inter City Reserve (2s): Stirling 48 - Marr Rugby 53
West Reserve 1 (3s): Marr Rugby 28 - Dumfries Saints 0

Mixed fortunes for Marr Rugby's three senior teams playing on Saturday.

1st XV:
The 1st XVs visit to Mansfield Park ended in misery as uncharacteristic errors peppered the 80 minutes and the home side capitalised on these. At half time Marr were down 18-6 and still looked as though things might improve, but in the second half Hawick continued to defend well and pressure forced mistakes that were ruthlessly punished.

A bright point from the day was the 1st XV debut appearance of 18 year old Jamie Braddock who came on during the second half after Aiden Orr had to retire through injury. Jamie is now the latest of the young players who have progressed through our youth pathway to reach the 1st XV. His debut will be the first of many appearances and we are sure he will quickly become a crowd favourite.

2nd XV
A tremendous second half fight back saw the 2s claim an important 5 point away win at Bridgehaugh in a 101 point thriller. Always a challenging place to visit and this season even more so as the abandonment of the Super Series initiative saw Stirling's club sides significantly strengthen by the return of their semi pro players and the knock on effect across the club's sides. Marr Rugby's 2s coach Harry Murray knew the task his squad faced was going to be even tougher after Callum Steel, Graeme Dick, Kyle McCulloch and Jamie Braddock were moved to the 1s squad to cover for absences

At half time the 2s were down 31-13 and faced an uphill struggle but the troops rallied and answered the challenge with a match winning second half performance to run out worthy winners.

It's now two wins from two for the 2nd XV in the West Conference ofthe first stage of the league. A great start but a long way to go as Marr Rugby continue in the mission to be at the top table of Reserve rugby.

3rd XV
Marr Rugby's 3s opening match ended with a good win but in unexpected circumstances. Playing Dumfries Saints 2nd XV , Marr quickly got into their stride and some rapid scoring soon built up a healthy lead. Along the way though Dumfries had the added misfortune of starting to lose players to injuries and early in the second half with Marr leading 50 - 0 the visitors were forced to concede the contest after they dropped below the minimum numbers required to be able to continue the match as a contest.

Therefore as the fixture was considered unfulfilled and therefore Marr Rugby awarded a 28-0 bonus point win.

Reflecting on the match coach Andy Mathieson and captain Chris Myers will be happy to have had a reasonable hit out and start planning for their next match, a Friday night under the lights local derby at Millbrae against Ayr's 3rd XV.
