Tony McGuffie was born on 10th June 1940 and died on 15th December 2025 aged 85. Tony had a wonderful rugby career, starting when he joined Marr College FP in 1958 where he established himself as a first XV regular. He played tight-head prop and formed part of the fearsome front row of comprising McGuffie, Connell and Dunsmuir. He represented the Glasgow District Senior side and also the Ayrshire County team. He captained the Club in 1967 and was part of the title winning side who won the 4th Division Championship.
Tony was approached by West of Scotland in his heyday but his loyalty remained with Marr. It should be mentioned that in his autobiography, Broon from Troon, Gordon Brown noted that Tony McGuffie was the best uncapped prop he’d ever played with.
Tony was an extremely popular teammate and an integral part of Marr Rugby Club. His sons, Crawford and Kerr, also played for Marr which was a source of pride to Tony and indeed his grandsons are continuing the legacy.
The funeral service for Tony will be held on Tuesday 6th January at Portland Church Troon at 10am. Family, friends and former teammates would be welcome to attend and help celebrate his life and give him the send-off he deserves.
RIP Tony McGuffie
