Marr Rugby preview: Defending the title begins!

Marr Rugby senior fixture (27.8.2022)

Tennent’s Premiership: Marr Rugby v Musselburgh RFC (Match sponsor CCL Logistics & Technology)

Marr Rugby’s 1st XV open their campaign to defend the Championship title with a tricky fixture against Musselburgh.

It’s tricky for several reasons:

  • Musselburgh seem to always manage to draw Marr into a serious arm wrestle in the packs. This often thwarts Marr’s attempts to play a more expansive game.
  • The visitors will undoubtedly continue to be seriously narked by what they saw as an injustice when the sides last met .This was at Stoneyhill in January 2022 and where Marr, while under serious pressure, edged home with a narrow victory.
  • Musselburgh, and the other eight sides in the Premiership, will want to be the first to claim the honour of taking the Champions scalp.

Marr know well that they need to respect their challengers, be wary but positive, and play with energy and determination.

Both sides have significant changes from their last meeting. Marr’s match day squad has a nice blend. It includes lots of familiar names and faces, but also quite a few who will be making their debut for the 1st XV. This includes Andrew Ramage (sponsored by Alex Graham) who, after successfully graduating from youth rugby at Marr College, is likely to make his debut from the bench for Marr’s top team. He is the latest in the ever-lengthening line of young players who have worked their way up to senor rugby through Marr Rugby’s development pathway.

We are also delighted to welcome Callum Folan (sponsored by Jim McGuffie) to Marr’s ranks. A Borderer by birth, Callum has played youth rugby at Earlston, and Melrose, and age grade youth rugby for Scotland. He is now studying in Glasgow and last season played in National League 1 for Cartha. Eager to play at an even higher-level, Callum has opted to join Marr Rugby to help progress his rugby career.

Shabaz Khan (sponsored by The Coffee Bar by Expresso Kart) joined Marr, from Cartha last season, and is now ready to stake a claim in a front row berth in the 1s. Last year he made a major impact to the 2s and earned several Man of the match awards, and now gets the chance to show that he’s ready for another step up.
