Marr Rugby preview (8.10.2022): Testing time

Marr Rugby senior fixtures
Tennent’s Premiership: Hawick RFC v Marr Rugby
Tennent’s Reserve West 1: Marr Rugby v GHK
Tennenet’s Reserve West 2: Whitecraigs RFC 2s v Marr Rugby

Marr Rugby’s three senior sides are back in action on Saturday and each aim to build on last week’s good performances and results BUT all three sides face testing times.
Injuries and other issues on availability have added extra stress to the planning and preparation.

1st XV v Hawick (3pm Mansfield Park)

Mansfield Park is a place that a rugby side wants to visit when it has its strongest squad available. Hawick hold an impressive home record that compares well and even better against Marr’s at Fortress Fullarton. So far this season they are unbeaten.

After the great performance against Currie, Marr now need to kick on but plans have been dealt a blow by a growing injury list. In the pack, Andrew Acton, Gordon Reid and Robert Brown are unavailable. This sees Scott Clelland continue at prop and a potential debut for Liam Morrison (sponsored by Finesse Marquees), who is added to the bench. Returning to the squad, Curran McMillan is available and starts at hooker while Angus Johnston is in the back row. In the backs, Conor Bickerstaff is unavailable and is replaced by Matt O’Sullivan. Nairn Calder returns from injury to join the bench.

Hawick have a lot at stake including revenge for Marr knocking them out of the play-offs but also protecting ownership of the Bill McLaren Shield.

Marr’s squad know they will have to be at the top of their game to control and manage the Green Machine.

Marr Rugby 2nd XV v GHK (3pm at Fullarton)

With several players unavailable for the 2s – some stepping up to support the 1s and others, injury or work commitments, coaches Keith Dunsmuir and Rory McGee were almost having to dig out their boots.

In the end they have managed to pull together a good squad albeit a bit short on numbers for replacements.

For Marr supporters not travelling on Saturday – get up to Fullarton to help make up the numbers by getting behind the squad in what will likely be a cracker. The last match between the sides was played at a ferocious pace and intensity for the full 80 minutes and ended as a draw 10-10.
