The Rugby Gods smiled on the school senior team, after such a poor performance in the conference league game over the weekend, they kindly very quickly gave them an opportunity to right some wrongs with the visit of Glenalmond in the first round of the national Schools competition. After some tough reflections and conversations in groups, with individuals, forward pack and back line it was time to show each other, the coaches, parents and supporters what they were really all about.
The game however didn’t start of that way with Glenalmond opening and converting to go seven points up but the Marr boys pulled together and got behind each other and started to take control of the game, a great team effort getting Flynn Jackson over the line to open the Marr account another good team effort working the ball from right to left and back across the pitch to open a gap for Zach Kelly to go through and with that converted by Alasdair Campbell to get Marr ahead, a lead they never gave up. This gelled the team and even as the rain came on they played the ball every well and weren’t afraid to move it about. Discipline was an issue for both teams with the new tackle height being cited for many penalties from both side, one converted for the visitors ensuring that they stayed in contention no matter how well Marr played, daylight was opened when first Bruce Abbott and then Ruari Anderson got over the try line but with Glenalmond never fading away some frantic play and repeated penalties lead t o a first and quickly followed by a second yellow card for Marr leading the official to award a penalty try against Marr. With both teams struggling with conditions, the new laws, the official saw Glenalmond pick a yellow card as the half came to a close and the ref having some stern words with both captains.
HT 26-17
The second half started a lot calmer than the first one ended which was to be expected and the Marr boys settled well into controlling the game as they had in the first, two tries by Jamie Braddock on his way to becoming Man of the Match, he was involved in everything all over the pitch and left it all out there, exactly what the coaches where looking after the previous match, opened up some day light once more. As the half wore it was very pleasing to see that as the players rotated from the bench the same level was maintained across the team which was just as well as Glenalmond refused to give in the match scoring the next try as they hung in there, discipline was better in the second half and a lot of rugby played up and down the pitch the game was finally put to bed by Zach Kelly’s second which was converted by Keir Anderson, happy day for the Anderson family with the brothers playing together and both getting in amongst the points.
FT 45 -24.
So onwards and upwards in the CUP, as we wait to find out our next opponents and thanking only some light knocks as we travel to Lomond for the next conference game on Saturday, games are coming thick and fast at the moment, we have the Rugby Gods to thank for that……
