Hamilton/Cumnock Match Reports

P3
Marr P3 lined up against both Cumnock and the hosts at Hamilton on Sunday, fielding 2 teams of 5 and 6 players.

Each team played very well in both their matches, we are used to much bigger pitches, our boys worked well with limited space. Coaches are encouraged to see training points frequently coming in to play.

Marr Purple
Kenzie, Ewan Math, Ryan, Ewan Morr, Bruce

Marr Gold
James, Will, Jamie, Robbie, Fionn, Jack

Marr Purple and Gold dominated both matches showing great attacking flare, combining both good handling skill and elusive running.

Tries came thick and fast 10+ per match, and from all players, sidestepping, passing, scissors, and with communication - all good

Disciplined positional play throughout resulted in a great defensive wall, shutting down all opposition possession, forcing play sideways or back.

P4
Last time out, against GHK, the P4s were a bit sluggish and seemed to have forgotten much of what they had learned recently. On Saturday it was a totally different story. Only seven boys were available to play but they all came along in high spirits and ready to play rugby. We warmed up with some unopposed rucking and they were clearly in the mood to put it into practice against some opposition.

The first game was Marr against the hosts, Hamilton, and Marr took it by storm, running in 12 tries to none. Marr carried on from the warm up into the game, successfully recycling the ball on the ground and turning over Hamilton ball. Tackling was impressive and pretty consistent for P4 rugby and the Hamilton boys simply couldn't compete. Although the boys were delighted with the 12 tries, the coaches were more pleased with the nil part of the score as it is represented a real achievement in all defence.

In the second game Marr played Cumnock, a team they had not taken on since narrowly losing to them in a bruising game of touch more than a year ago. Cumnock provided a sterner test than Hamilton but Marr were much better, taking the lead early on and winning comfortably by ten tries to four. The rucking that was so successful in the first game drifted out of the game as boys got tired and we will have to keep working on that pattern of play to get it ingrained but the coaches couldn't really have asked much more of the boys.

It was another great morning of rugby, which kept us all smiling even after the Scotland game.

John

P5
A squad of 10 made the trip to Hamilton to face the host and fellow visitors Cumnock. Luke Masterson was making his debut for the purples and was joined by Duncan, Adam, Charlie, Ross, Joe, Findlay, Josh, Rhys and Kyle.

The focus of the morning (apart from having fun) was our passing, which the boys had been working very hard on over the last couple of training sessions. Four 10 minute games were pencilled in, the sun was shining, what could be better?

In the first game against Hamilton I think it's fair to say that both sides could improve on their tackling! A basketball style encounter with both teams going from end to end picking up tries with every attack. The main difference between the two teams was the breakown work from Marr. The boys did really well at looking for the offload when tackled going forward, and competed at the ruck in defence. In the end those skills told and the purples ran out winners by 7 tries to 5, including a debut try from Luke and some superb taking the ball at speed from Joe.

Next up were the boys from Cumnock. What they lacked in numbers they certainly made up for in quality. Goodness they had some powerful and skillfull runners! It was a pleasure to watch them, all of them adept at changes of direction and side steps, all carried out at the lowest possible centre of gravity. Slippery doesn't cover it. I counted a couple of tries for the purples, but our Ayrshire friends ran out comfortable winners.

The boys were not all revved up and ready for match 3 against Hamilton. This time in defence they were encouraged to move up in a line from restarts and the pressure paid off. They kept the hosts down to only a couple of scores in the 10 minutes, whilst managing to outscore by at least 2 to 1. Plenty of excellent defensive effort all round, which would surely be needed for the last match of the morning.

The best was saved until last and the boys were tasked with delivering an improved performance against Cumnock. They certainly did that and delighted the watching crowd by standing up to their opponents! We saw some lovely link play, I even saw an overlap taken care of in a match situation. Better defensive rucking too made it difficult for Cumnock, as did a defence moving forwards which stopped their mazy runners getting upto full speed.

A super morning had by all, complemented by the coaches and parents from Hamilton who were very hospitable.

P6
We travelled through to Hamilton with a skeleton squad of 8, to face Hamilton A, Hamilton B and Cumnock.
Our squad for saturday comprised off;

Alexander Hendry
Alex Young
Dan Lawton
Ben Packard
Rory Ingles
Sean Kelly
Charlie Baker
Harris Hillier

With perfect weather conditions the boys were happy and relaxed during warm up and all held a quiet confidence about them in the lead up to our opening game.
Like our opponents we were a bit messy overall but after our first 8 minutes we began to find our feet and started to sort ourselves out!
The coaches have been encouraging defensive and attacking lines these past few weeks and it was evident that the boys had this in mind during their games.
With only the slightest of prompts they were committing 2/3 at the breakdown whilst the others were quickly moving into position.

Harris Hillier- settled nicely into his scrum half position, he was quick onto the ball, and quick to deliver.

Dan Lawton- his blistering pace and ability to find space earned him 6 trys for the day.

Alex Young- the workhorse of the squad, clearing out, tackling well, breaking through, very unlucky not to be on the score sheet.

Charlie Baker- well well! Without fail the most outstanding tackling performance of his minis career to date! Most notably taking out the big guy in spectacular style at the re start, before the rest of the boys even made 2 yards!

Sean Kelly - previously unwell, sean arrived fully committed and did not disappoint! As usual, an absolutely relentless performance. A 'get the job done' mentality.

Ben Packard - good runs, supporting well, and tackling had improved substantially in comparison to previous matches. 2 trys for the day.

Rory Inglis - the Inglis dummy (not his dad ) made a few appearances along side some excellent runs, offloads, and tackles, a not too shabby 5 trys for the day!

Alexander Hendry - Alexander was focused and determined throughout, i would say the most proactive of the squad, winning most of our turnovers, keeping the squad organised, and bagging 1 try for the day!

50% of our trys were the result of clearing out well, quick delivery of the ball to an already well positioned line, with ball carrier plus one support runner breaking through, ball carrier offloading to support runner with perfect timing and only yards from the try line. Excellent to watch!
The only constructive criticism is we could have been more effective when tackling and we seemed to hold back slightly on the re start where we should have been pushing forward at pace. Saying that, im absolutely delighted with both their individual, and their team performance, nobody was carried, nobody gave less than 100% and they finished with their heads held high and a smile on their face.

Hamilton A 1 Marr 4
Hamilton B 4 Marr 6
Cumnock 1 Marr 3

A very deserving clean sweep for the Mighty Marr P6!

Regards Gregor
