Marr Rugby - senior squad selections for 9 September 2017

BT Premiership: Marr Rugby v Heriot’s FC (3pm (K.O.)
BT National Reserve: Biggar v Marr Rugby (3pm K.O.)
BT West Reserve League 2: Kilmarnock 2s v Marr Rugby 3s (1.30pm K.O.)

All three Marr Rugby senior teams are in action with mouth-watering ties in prospect.

The 1st XV’s debut at home in the BT Premiership against Heriot’s provides another landmark in club history and this season the two year record at Fullarton will be under greater threat than ever before. Last week’s opener against Glasgow Hawks gave an early sense of just how tough the season will be and undoubtedly Heriot’s visit will take this up another notch.

After a very impressive start last week the 2s face a tricky tie against Biggar at Hartree Mill. Both sides were promoted into the national league having finished 2016/17 as champions of their respective regional reserve leagues.

The newly promoted 3s open their campaign with a local derby against Kilmarnock’s 2nd XV.

Marr Rugby 1st XV preview: After last week’s disappointment Marr’s 1st XV will have to make sure they apply the learning taken from the match to, at least, reduce the error count and make sure that they capitalise on and chances. The squad sees a number of changes from last week. Stephen Adair starts at hooker and after a good performance last week for the 2s, Gregor Ness is given a place on the bench where he is joined by new signing Greg Jackson.

Marr's pack found the going tough last week against a big pack and Heriot's will provide an even sterner test not least because the Edinburgh Pro, Murray McCallum is added to their ranks.

The Fullarton support will make all welcome and in particular those making home debut, namely Kaleem Baretto, Kyle Hatherall, Greg Jackson, Ross Jackson, Ross Miller and Richard Dalgleish,

Marr Rugby 2nd XV preview: With Gregor Ness stepping up from last week’s squad and five other players unavailable through injury or other commitments coaches Keith Dunsmuir and Stephen Galloway have to ring the changes. This includes the number eight slot and captaincy as Josh Evans is on holiday. Fraser Grant steps into the breach and gets a chance to play in one of his favourite positions as well as taking on the captain’s armband.

Hartree Mill is always a tough venue for visiting sides and Marr will need to at/near the top of their game to challenge in what is likely to be a fiercely competitive and combative match. Both sides relish playing open attacking 15-man rugby and the home side will be in confident mood following their win last week away from home against Dundee.

Marr Rugby 3rd XV preview: The sides are well known to each other. Disruption to scheduled fixtures over the past few seasons, with opponents calling off, led to the sides meeting on a regular basis in a number of ‘friendlies’. These fixtures offered a good challenge to Marr’s ambitious squad and no doubt helped them win promotion. Now meeting for the first time on league business there’s little doubt that there will be an added edge as the home side try to show who is “top dog”.

Coach Andy Mathieson will finalise his selection on Saturday. Squad will be drawn from following players.

  • Andrew Daniels
  • Sean Duff
  • Shaun Fallows
  • Jason Munchen Doolan
  • Fraser McPherson
  • Rory MacColl
