Marr Rugby - senior squad selections for 11 March 2017

BT National League 1: Jed Forest RFC v Marr Rugby (2pm)
BT Reserve League West 1: Hamilton RFC v Marr Rugby (2pm)
BT Reserve League West 3: Lenzie RFC 2s v Marr Rugby (1pm)

On Calcutta Cup Saturday all three Marr Rugby senior XV’s are in action and playing in important and in some cases potentially decisive matches.

The 1s travel to Jed Forest for what will be the biggest club game of the day while the 2s result from their visit to Hamilton may take them over the finishing line with three matches remaining. Last but not least the 3s travel to Lenzie in a top of the table clash with the winner’s prize being the league title.

All three matches kick-off early as warm-ups for the international. Marr’s travelling support will be spread all across the country and those who have still to decide what to do on Saturday are urged to get along to one of the three matches to add support.

1st XV preview: The 1s third visit to Riverside Park will be watched by many as the result is likely to have some significant bearing on the end positions for the season. Jed lie in third spot but with three re-arranged fixtures still to play have points opportunities that could propel them to the top or second spot. Marr hold a narrow four point advantage over Edinburgh Accies with both clubs having three matches left.

In Marr’s previous visits to Riverside Park the home side have emerged comfortable winners. They benefit from having a strong squad of very experienced and skilful players. Their backline enjoys being able to play off a solid platform provided by a powerful pack. In the backs they have the three Young brothers - two of whom until recently were full time members of Scotland’s 7s squad. From previous encounters Marr’s players and supporters are well aware of the potent attacking threat that Jed can pose so they will need to be at the top of their game

With both clubs having so much to play for we expect another exciting and frenetic eighty minutes of rugby. Earlier in the season Marr enjoyed a narrow win (26-19) but many will remember that Jed had to play for most of the match with 14 players after a red card and with a man down went on to give Marr a torrid time. In the closing stages Jed lost a further player following a yellow card and Marr struggled to contain their relentless attacks as they threw everything in to securing a final score. This Saturday we need to show we have learned from the previous encounters and recent matches and ensure that we get a good early grip on the match.

Marr Rugby 2nd XV preview: The 2s exceptional run has taken them to touching distance of the league title. In the three remaining matches they only need to secure a single point to take them to an unassailable position and be able to claim the league title. The first opportunity is against Hamilton’s 3rd XV who we know well and realise they won’t be minded to lie down and roll over. Marr’s squad will have to work their collective socks off to get the result they need. This season the side has delivered some outstanding performances to achieve the impressive results so far. The 2s need to maintain the focus and momentum and then be able to reflect on their achievements.
After training on Thursday the 2s squad was still to be finalised
