Marr Rugby - senior squad selections for 10 February 2018

BT Cup, Quarter Final: Marr Rugby v Melrose RFC (2.30pm kick off)
BT National Reserve League 2: Hawick Force v Marr Rugby (3pm kick off)
BT West Reserve League 2: Marr Rugby v Ardrossan Accies 2s (1.30pm kick off)

It’s another ‘Super Saturday’ of rugby action for Marr Rugby’s senior sides, with Cup fever at Fullarton along with another Ayrshire derby while the 2nd XV hit road to Hawick for a top of the table clash. Marr Rugby supporters have a unique opportunity to get out to support the players and savour what we predict will be some exciting rugby action in all three matches. It is also our annual ladies day with nearly 150 ladies booked in for prosecco high tea. Fullarton set to be busy with the hope of creating a real cup atmosphere.

IMPORTANT NOTE – BT Cup rules mean that Marr Rugby season tickets are not valid for the 1st XV match and normal match entry price applies.

Marr Rugby 1st XV preview: Marr Rugby’s 1st XV meet Melrose for the second week in a row as the defending Champions arrive back at Fullarton. After last week’s performance and result in the league fixture the visitors will be in confident mood that they are odds on favourites to progress to the next round. Marr’s players and coaching team know they have a real challenge as they work towards showing continuing improvement playing against a side that is the best Marr have faced this season. Marr’s supporters will be a key factor in adding their voice and weight to make Melrose feel welcome and as we all know Cup matches are what dreams are made of. Marr’s 1st XV, playing at their best, deliver exciting and adventurous rugby and playing a side that also excels in open and expansive play we reckon we are in for a rugby feast.

Marr’s selection has been hit with several injuries and other unavailability issues. The troops turning out have a great opportunity to step up to the mark as they experience playing against top quality opposition. Fraser Ferguson, Murray Beckwith and assistant coach Kenny Diffenthal are included on the bench and likely to make their season debuts whilst Curran McMillan, who was an emergency call-up last week and went on to make his premiership debut, retains his place.

Marr Rugby 2nd XV preview: It’s showdown time at Hawick as the 2s travel to play the league leaders in this rea-arranged fixture. Marr’s only defeat of the season was against the Hawick who, in September, won at Fullarton by a narrow margin 27-30. Hawick have suffered a single defeat and lead the league by four points but Marr also have a game in hand so the result today will have major significance on the run in as the season hits the home run in.

Coaches Keith Dunsmuir and Stephen Galloway face major selection headaches as several key players are called up into the 1st XV squad. Despite this they know that their squad have worked well and hard in training and are up for whatever Hawick can throw at them.

Marr Rugby 3rd XV preview: The 3rd XV play host to Ardossan Accies 2nd XV, knowing that the visitors arrive still smarting from the result of the reverse fixture where Marr came away from the Memorial Field with an impressive 21-41 win. As a local derby we anticipate that it’ll be another blood and guts affair with no quarter given by either side.

The match will be won or lost in the last 20 minutes as fitness or fatigue kicks in. Most of Marr’s 3rd XV squad have been working hard and well in the additional training sessions that are now being delivered by their strength and conditioning lead Rory MacColl and this will leave them well placed to compete for the full eighty minutes. The squad selection is impinged by several players having to step up to support the 2s but nevertheless the troops left will give their best shot to make it a double.
