Marr Rugby round up (14.4.18): Melrose success for Marr Rugby

Marr Rugby’s 7s squad delivered great entertainment for a packed Greenyards and TV audience as they progressed through to the semi-finals of the Aberdeen Standard Investments Melrose 7s, only to lose out on a last play try from eventual tournament winners Watsonians.

The short game provides a real test of stamina and concentration and blistering pace and fast feet are essential.

Marr progressed through the stages with wins against Kelso (19-29), Poland (33-7) and GHA (20-21). GHA presented a real challenge having beaten Gala and Ayr to reach the quarter-final against Marr. During the match Marr had to clawback a two try deficit and it was a tight finish as Marr took the lead and managed to hold on to this under real pressure.

In the semi-final Marr controlled the first half scoring two tries before having to face a sustained onslaught from a fiery Watsonians side. They scored twice to level the score. In a seesaw and pulsating ending they managed to prevent Gregor Paxton from scoring in the corner before going on to gain possession and break Marr’s supporters hearts with a winning try scored in the final play.
