Marr Rugby’s first visit to the NCS Glasgow City 7s saw the squad win their group stage, beating Ayr (31 – 14) and Cartha Queen’s Park (34 – 7) to progress to the semi-final of the cup competition.

They came up against and lost the eventual tournament winners, Scottish Rugby’s Academy select (17 – 33), comprising the rising stars earmarked to progress to professional contracts and future international honours. Names to watch out for are George Horne (Glasgow Warriors), Struan Hutchison, Thomas Klein and Ruairi Knott (Melrose); Robert Kay (Heriot’s), Jonny Goldring (Watsonians) and Thomas Gordon (Currie), Hamilton Burr (Aberdeen Grammar), Paul Paxton (Aberdeenshire) and Nick Grigg (Stirling County) – with Grigg set to join Glasgow Warriors next season.

Marr found the Academy side well drilled, defensibly tight and able to play all aspects of the match at pace and with precision and they ran out eventual winners in the semi-final (17 – 33). The Academy side ended comfortable tournament winners

Marr’s try scores were
Scott Bickerstaff: (2)
Fraser Grant: (2)
Stuart Howie: (4)
Colin Sturgeon: (4)
Kyle Vallance: (2)

Colin Sturgeon added six conversions.
