End of an era!

George Boyd aged 98 has sadly passed away earlier this week. George a much loved and larger than life character will be sorely missed.

“George Boyd was born in 1920 and he went to Marr College from 1935 when it opened, til 1939 from the ages of 15 to 19. He was a rugby player for the First 15 of Marr College school and he got his colours while at Marr College.

After Marr College he was a founder member of Marr Rugby Club FP’s. He was Captain of the First 15. He thought the FP rugby club had been formed around 1943. He however left to go and work with ICI on foreign shores in 1952. Marr Rugby Club was playing on the Marr College rugby fields when he left as they always had. However, when he left there was discussions with the Director of Marr College, Dr Muireson, and Marr FP’s rugby club weren’t allowed to play on the college fields from then on. It was after 1953 that they moved to the fields in Fullarton Woods but he didn’t know the exact date.

George Boyd was a prefect of Marr College. He was Captain of Lothian House at Marr College.

He worked for ICI in various countries, inclusive of Australia. He worked for ICI until his retirement in 1985. He was friendly with Ian Horn. We chatted about Ian Horn and that led us on to the subject of Marr Rugby Club.

George Boyd was a founder member and helped found Marr Rugby FP’s. He said that the main co-founder was a Len Holt. He said Ian Horn was involved as was Sandy Paton (to be Provost of Troon, Sandy Paton, father of David Paton).”
