CUP WOES FOR MARR
WATSONIANS RFC versus MARR RUGBY
MATCH REPORT
Last Saturday Marr 1st VX faced their toughest match of the season, when they travelled to Myreside in Edinburgh to face high flying Watsonians.
Marr were immediately dealt a blow, when Colin Sturgeon, Marr’s play maker, called off due to illness. With the back reshuffled, Marr kicked off and were immediately under pressure from a strong Watsonians side.
Watsonians showed Marr how to handle the ball in wet conditions with some slick handling from their back division and soon had scored a handful of tries.
Marr dug deep, but to no avail, ending the first half 38 point to nil.
The second half was somewhat better, with Marr’s forwards controlling the ball for a good fifteen minute period and pressurised the Watsonians line on several occasions. Finally after many phases of forward interaction Josh Evans managed to penetrate the home team’s line to score Marr solitary try.
Marr continued to fight, however, as the weather deteriorated so did Marr defence and Watsonians scored a few more, resulting in the final score Watsonians 62 Marr 5.
This is a match that Marr will want to forget. Watsonians showed Marr why they are flying high in the Premier division, with some very skilful and speedy backs. Marr can take consolation from the fact that our scrum held up nicely and our line out remained effective. However, Marr missed many tackles that they wouldn’t normally miss and failed on too many occasions to get over the gain line.
Nest week, at home, Marr face their old rival Jed Forest, in an absolute vital match, back to familiar territory, in National 1 League action.
Marr’s man of the match, Ben Johnston, proved to be the only Marr player who was a thorn on the Watsonians side.
