Marr v Helensburgh
Monday, March 1st 2010
Marr’s first fifteen played their first game of the month on Saturday as they welcomed Helensburgh to Troon. Helensburgh currently sit seventh in the league and won the earlier fixture between the two teams 26-16. Marr were able to field a strong side with Rory McGee at stand off in only his second game since returning from injury.
Marr started well and were able to take the lead with Andrew Gault running in the first try of the afternoon. Gault fielded a kick on the half way line running outside the cover defence before cutting in to score under the posts. Rory McGee kicked the conversion to give Marr an early 7-0 lead.
Marr doubled their lead a few minutes later when Shaun Little cut back inside and drove between the two centres to score. Rory McGee again added the two extra points to take the score to 14-0.
Marr held out for most of the first half as Helensburgh started to assert themselves but with just a couple of minutes to go Helensburgh made the breakthrough that their territorial dominance deserved. This took the halftime score to 14-7.
The second half saw Helensburgh start to dominate as they ran in 27 unanswered points taking the final score to 14-34. Helensburgh were very dominant during the second period with Marr struggling to get out of their own half and trying to play rugby in the wrong areas of the park. Helensburgh controlled the tempo and took their opportunities when they arose. Marr missed too many tackles and made too many mistakes throughout the match.
This result leaves Marr sitting third in the table ten points behind second placed Allan Glens having played one game more. Next week sees fifth placed GHK travel to Troon, the game kicks off at 3pm. The second fifteen welcome Strathendrick to Troon which also kicks off at 3pm. Training continues on Tuesday and Thursday night at 7pm and anyone wishing to play is welcome to come along and join in.
