Tough out West

Monday, January 25th 2010

The second fifteen travelled to Glasgow to take on third placed West of Scotland not having played since the 5th of December, when they ran out 26-8 winners against Ardrossan. West last played on the 12th of December and were narrowly beaten by league leaders Glasgow Accies.

It was a cold damp day in Glasgow and Marr started badly as West scored inside the first five minutes as Marr showed their naivety in dealing with the rolling maul from the line out as West trundled over for their first try. This naivety would haunt Marr for the rest of the afternoon as West used the rolling maul from the line out as the platform for most of the scoring opportunities. West scored from another rolling maul five minutes later.

Marr then started to fight back making their way up the pitch and into the oppositions half before being awarded a penalty which bounced back off the cross bar. Marr were soon awarded another penalty which Chris Galloway slotted to take the score to 10-3.

West ran in one more try at the end of the first half when their winger managed to touch down in the corner, taking the half time score to 15-3.

The second half saw West score early after some nice interplay between forwards and backs. Marr then started to fight back and spent the next ten minutes in the West twenty two, Marr’s scrum dominated for most of the game and during this period Marr’s picking and driving saw them held up over the line on a couple of occasions before flanker Keith Dunsmuir spun over the line to score Marr’s first and only try of the afternoon. Chris Galloway kicked the conversion to take the score to 20-10.

Much of the next ten minutes of the game was played in the middle of the pitch however it was West who got the upper hand and they ran in two tries in the last five minutes of the game, one of which was converted to take the final score to 32-10.

Marr struggled in the first half of this game but managed to make a much more of a game of it in the second half. Marr’s scrum functioned well with Shawn Fallows and Adam Cairns both putting in good performances in the boiler room. In the back line Chris Galloway played well as did Mike Ross and Kris Ferguson, but Marr’s man of the match was back row Steven Gilmore who put in a good performance in the loose and tackling well.

Next weekend sees the league leader’s travel to Fullarton Park with a 3pm kick off. Training continues on Tuesday and Thursday nights a 7pm and anyone wishing to play is welcome to come along and join in.
