Good luck to all teams tomorrow and the 1sts have a tough fixture against a strong young side which who like Marr are very ambitious and have a very strong junior section who are now graduating into senior rugby.

This should be a real cracker of a match with both sides coming off very good victories on the opening day and markers for the season will definitely be laid tomorrow. We must maintain our very very good home record at "Fortress Fullerton" but its going to be a hard game.

I only wish I was on the hill with all the other old farts! ( sorry lis ) so everyone get up there tomorrow and be our 16th man and I am sure our mixture of old sweats and young guns with the right attitude and the wee bit of luck you always need will do it.

As ever watching from afar and good luck to the 2s who start the league tomorrow as strength in depth will be the key this year and to the school in the traditional opener against our old adversaries Hutchy.

Andy ...... Welcome to fair play rugby.. love and cuddles all round !!!!!!!!!

Ayrshire Rugby Festival @ Cumnock RFC

The P5’s took 15 players to the festival, Kilmarnock, Garnock and the hosts were in attendance. We had to give Kilmarnock and Garnock 2 players each as they were short of numbers, fair play to the 4 boys who swapped teams they gave their all and did Marr proud.
Format was a round robin however there was a novel scoring system with judgies at the sideline allocating points to the teams based on handling, sportsmanship, organisation etc, even the coaches were "judged" on their conduct at the side of the pitch. Needless to say Marr came out on top sweeping aside all before them and taking the trophy. A good day all round and well organised by the hosts.

Not sure about the points system, a team could beat everyone before them and still not win the event...??

I’ll take seven then!!!!!!

Sadly no, Tayte- not allowable under some killjoy Trading Standards regulations.I should say however that the Club cannot be held responsible should any wearer of the new range of kit find himself/herself instantly mobbed by members of the opposite sex.....

I would like to ask, do the girls in the photo come with every kit purchased?

Posted by: baldrick  [ August 31st 2010, 05:27:44 ]

Wow just had a look at the Zoti kit and the range is fantastic and congratulations to all who were involved in putting this together. We will not have only one of the best youth set ups in Scotland but also one of the smartest. Congratulations so is the standard kit for P3 through to the seniors including the school?

Well done to the 1’s at the weekend, great start, however, the 2’s had a tough last warm up game v Glasgow Accies, and all things considered, we performed very well, probably our best performance against them in a long time, going down only 25-11. WE had most of the possession which was used effectively however, I feel some decisions hampered our points tally. Not to worry, out 1st league game is this sat v Stewartry away, a classis awaits, so anyone wanting a trip on the bus is welcome.
Can I also ask if anyone can put up on the site the 2nd xv fixtures plus league as there are 2 senior teams after all.

P7s took part in an "Ayrshire Festival" at Garnock RFC on 29/08/10.

Garnock organised it very well, but really disappointing that only the host team, Cumnock, Irvine and Marr could muster teams for an event organised by SRU development team months ago.Ayrshire rugby at mini level is not in a good state.

Irvine are starting to get their act together with 2 really good coaches, and turned out a squad of big lads with some not bad players. However they only have 37 registered players across all age groups so well done them !!.

We won all our games comfortably and the kids have adapted really well to 5 man scrums and the introduction of 4 man lineouts.

We are hampered by lack of numbers ( we really need 20 kids )and size, some of them could be mistaken for P3s,but there are some really talented players and our strongest side will match most teams.

For a first competitive outing very encouraging.

Just heard that a former Marr College pupil and College rugby player, Jamie Berry was tragically killed in a car accident in Aberdeenshire over the weekend. I gather that he played with Robbie Lockie, Steeley etc. Thoughts are with his family.

View from the touchline:

GHK 15 – Marr Rugby 24

Season 2010–11 started with an away trip to Old Anniesland and an encounter with GHK. This is always a difficult encounter, against a side who like to play fast and open rugby and who last year ended the season in third place in the league, and today’s result is very pleasing for a number of reasons.

Our last away win against GHK was in 2006–07.

Our pre-season preparations resulted in some squad rotation. This is a polite way of saying that as you read the injury/unavailable for other reasons list you may reasonable have thought that it would make a very strong team on its own.

All credit though is due to those who stepped in today gave a very good account of themselves, making the prospect of competition for places interesting and equally as important – cover for what we anticipate will be a long and hard campaign.
We witnessed a very good team effort, which provided a platform where we savoured:

- a pack going forward at the scrum and winning balls against the head.
- lineouts launching attacks and counter-attacks
- some sterling defensive play from forwards and backs with few missed first up tackles
- clever tactical play, including kicking that provided much needed ground – everyone knows how much the forwards prefer when this works…
- some electrifying attacks with two excellent tries and a couple of nearlies!
some individual performances from more seasoned campaigners, that reminded us of what our team is capable of delivering
the opportunity of seeing some of our new starts in competitive action – and this has made us hungry to see more.

Our two tries were scored by 1st XV debutants, with Messrs McNicol and Mackintosh providing the finishing touches and to both a big welcome and thank you.

To the game –
Traditionally we don’t travel well and are slow starters. Within a minute we were 5 points down. GHK capitalised on some sloppy play and scored what might be the quickest try of the season. This spurred GHK to come at us with all guns blazing and although we managed to pull back three points thanks to a penalty struck from half way, we seemed a bit nervous and had to endure a first quarter where our defence was soundly tested. We were able to make the most of kicking opportunities and as the first half drew to a close sat 9 – 8 to the good.

As we grew into the game we saw what our team effort could deliver both in set piece and loose play. As such I’m going to avoid singling out individual players by name…those playing and those who were on the touchline will recognise what took place….those who weren’t but know the team should be able to recognise the play and to all others…come along support the team and learn!

The backs benefited from good ball won at scrum and lineout, often from defensive positions. We saw some rehearsed moves actually work. Midfield defence was superb with very few first tackles missed and even when this happened we had purple nearby to help. In fact this was the constant…our team support was there and working and it was really great to see that this involved interplay between forwards and backs. We are well aware of the potential threat that GHK’s back line offers and often during the game had to deal with this. It was disrupted by some textbook defensive play with Marr players showing exactly what they are capable of…we loved this and want more!!!

On the front foot, our first try was a forwards effort. Just at the end of the first half our tactical kicking took us close to GHK’s line and from the lineout, the resulting phases were forward drives and the final inches were hard fought with GHK, as you can appreciate, not being too keen to yield. A huge pile over with a mass of bodies involved and thankfully the referee was well positioned to raise his arm leaving the only question of who got the touchdown? Last man up was Keith…but he was simply making the most of the opportunity to catching breath and the credit fell to the other side of the front row with Ritchie getting the final touch.

The second forty minutes provided some more enthralling play with glimpses of promise, lineout continuing to work well, the scrum still going forward and this platform made it interesting to see and show what the backs could make of that oft used cliché…good ball! Some things worked well, some very well and some need more work. We saw blistering pace and great lines of running, some with power and some with an elusiveness that must be a nightmare for a defender. We saw forwards getting involved in support.

We saw Marr hungry to get involved and on a couple of occasions our attack merited points as reward.

Our second try came towards the end of the third quarter when we were able to open up the GHK defence from a scrum. Electric pace from our scrum-half and the advancing Marr back line provided an opportunity to ghost through the GHK line before they managed to scramble some cover to stop the first attack but a quick offload meant that we were able to sustain the attack and finish it off with a try. This play showed what we had been doing as a team as the offload was from Connor to Alistair who, throughout the match, seemed to saviour his first outing.

For the last quarter GHK, determined to take something from the game, upped the ante and again we had to demonstrate our defensive skills. They launched attack after attack and just before the end of the match reaped reward with a well-deserved try.

For us a good hard work-out with a very good all round team effort, made all the more enjoyable as everyone realises that we can do better.

Next up, North Berwick – newly promoted to NL3 and who started their season with a bang, sounding beating Cambuslang 49 – 5.

Posted by: Serevi  [ August 28th 2010, 19:37:35 ]

Well done today to the first XV for a gutsy display V GHK in Glasgow. If I remember correctly, this has not been a happy hunting ground for us in recent seasons.

Although we were missing some players there was a good combination of seasoned campaigners (Dunsmuir,Shadow,Steely,Don, etc) and a healthy dollop of very promising young talent in the 18-21 age bracket.

A bit of constructive criticism - if we could have cut out the unforced errors today we would have got the bonus point. More than a few too many dropped passes and throwing the ball away when we should have set it up. All this needs is less panic & a bit more composure - easily achieved.

All in all though, an awesome result on our bogey fixture, away from home on the first day of the league.

Very, very well done.

Message to all Midi Coaches!

The Rugby Academy 2010 has made a profit of £460 after all expenses. I would like to hear from all Midi Coaches how you would like to spend this money. (Gear Only)!!!!

I understand we all need match balls at £50 a ball but what else is needed? Evasion belts? Ladders? New tackle bags?

Cheers

Good luck to all teams today and lets get off to a flyer.

Talking about flying how much will it cost to fly to the orkneys and how are we going to pay for that?

Will the sru contribute a considerable sum as it is ridiculous for clubs in national 3 to face travel costs like that utter madness especially when a perfectly good regionalisation plan was submitted to the sru

Our away form cost us dearly last year and heres hoping that we can get off to a flyer even if its a win with a scuffed kick. Good luck boys.

As a new season begins, the usual request applies. All donations for raffle prizes would be greatly appreciated as this means that more money is raised to cover the costs during a season. Donations can be left behind the bar or given to me. I also have hidden (rugby) team cards and anyone can have some to sell in their workplace or to family and friends to raise even more funds.
I have them in the boot of my car and I will also leave some behind the bar.

Thanks again.

Glenn - it was mixed team that Ayr fielded with some Colts in amongst the Seconds.

A good effort from our troops with improvements from Saturday.

Posted by: glenn davis  [ August 11th 2010, 12:51:11 ]

It was Ayr Colts we played Dougie who i think would be their under 19 team bolstered by one or two more senior players. We lost 4-3 on tries but a good workout fitness wise and a better performance with less errors than v Whitecraigs. Young Fraser Grant and Calum Craig played and both showed up well and the Bickerstaff boys were back and also played well. Will look forward to Calum Craig teaming up again with Crouch in the second row as that looks a good pairing. Best player last night in my opinion was Ayr’s no 14, called Aden Holland I think, who looked a great prospect.

Posted by: Dougie McCormack  [ August 11th 2010, 12:03:23 ]

How did it go last night against Ayr 2’s?

Posted by: glenn davis  [ August 10th 2010, 17:17:29 ]

Cheers Bob thanks for info will be there. Serevi the Whitecraigs game was 4x20 or 25 min quarters with rolling subs with us giving Whitecraigs a loan of props Neil Campion and Mark Underwood when injury required. We were without Gaulty Steeley and the Bickerstaff boys but did have the chance to field some of the younger players like Kyle Ritchie and Badger. The benefit was in getting some contact practice and a level of competitiveness for our lads from both 1st XV and 2nd XV.The final score was around seven tries to one to the opposition and Whitecraigs looked an excellent well-drilled side who I think will be challenging for another promotion this year. That said in my own personal view Rory was the best player on the park and Don and Shadow and the two Kirks all caught the eye. The two Carrick lads also showed that they are determined to get into the first XV with a great attitude throughout. More worryingly we had a couple of injuries one to Andy Bate= cheekbone - awaiting tests once swelling subsides and Andy Watson split eyebrow so fingers crossed they will be back soon. As an exercise it was useful but the lineout was misfiring and rustiness was evident in a number of missed tackles. Craig will be demanding more in terms of workrate in the matches to come. From the spectator viewpoint it was great to see a game again and the appetite for the new season was evident as acquaintances were renewed on the touchline and in the bar. Roll on the new season and cmon the Marr

Posted by: Serevi  [ August 10th 2010, 15:36:51 ]

Heard through the grapevine that we lost to Whitecraigs. I think 5-40 was the final score. Absolutley no shame in this our first friendly result - as it was against a Premier 3 side, who by all accounts look like serious challengers for that league.

Looking forward to getting up to see our next fixture. I am sure all the hard work that has been going on will get a good return.

Off the field - whilst attending a function at the club a couple of weeks back I was astounded by the amount and quality of the renovations that have been going on inside and outside the building - our facilities are improving rapidly and are starting to match the level of ambition, effort and guile shown by our committee, players and supporters alike.

The facilites and social scene (bar takings) are absolutely crucial to all clubs and cannot be understated.

In summary it looks like exciting times lie ahead for Marr, on and of the pitch, in the coming season and thereafter.
