After speaking to the guys last night i think the preference would be to go to the Helensburgh tournament if we can only field one team, if on the other hand we can get the numbers and field two sevens teams then that would be great.
The reasoning for opting for Helensburgh is as follows:-
Helensburgh is closer, we have a better chance of winning some silverware, supporters will be willing to travel, none of the team members need to drive, which means every one can enjoy a pint after the game and if so inclined the team could stay late and enjoy the festivities.

Shadow,
Remember that the first seven have to go to Newton Stewart on the 17th. That invitiation was accepted a while back.
Posted by: shadow [ May 7th 2008, 15:00:10 ]
I have just had confirmation from the Helensburgh coach that the seven a side tournament is to go ahead on the 17th May, I have confirmed that Marr will attend.
I understand the u18s are playing at Kilmarnock but that is no reason why we can not send a team, some of the older lads will have to step up to the mark.
Snips, Rivet look at your sevens gear!
It sounds like it is going to be a good day out, Helensbugrh have organised a number of events.

Phewwwwww.............. Just in from the Easter coaching clinic and completley knackered.... To echo Alans coments a big thanks to the guys from the Warriors James and Murray, They took the time to get involved with all the drills and games and the kids loved it. Also a massive thanks to Ross S2, Ali, Euan, Danny, Michael, And Lewis from the P7’s who came up and helped out with the young ones you were a credit to the club. It was great to see 30+ kids many who had never had the rugby experiance before enjoying themselves. Many of the parents were asking about the mini training so hopefully new players will be coming along to mini rugby.

The future’s bright!
Marr Mini Tournament 2008 - (An unofficial view from the touchline)
Today saw the Marr mini tournament get off at the second time of asking. Thanks to Ayr, Camuslang, Hamilton and Irvine for supporting us in this venture. Despite the horrendous underfoot conditions there were some exceptional displays of great skills in each of the age groups…well done to all!
The day itself could not have been held without the support of the few who ‘pitched up’ to make sure that everything was in place and a heartfelt thanks to those (same old faces) who every year, rain hail or sunshine step up. Thanks, without your support we would be in some smelly sticky stuff.
To the match reports:
Primary 3: winners – Marr.
A great performance from a squad who show great potential - in their preparation they gave the Marr P4 squad a bit of a fright!
The p3’s (average age 7) provided two squads Marr and Fullarton for there section and both played with a high level of teamwork and skill that made their coaches’ extremely proud. Fullarton displayed strong commitment towards the ethos of rugby when in one match they provided some replacements to Cambuslang who has suffered injuries and run out of substitutes. Well done and this exemplifies Marr’s approach towards rugby.
The Marr squad played their final game against a very strong Ayr team in what was a winner takes all affair. Both teams showed great skill levels and what was even more enjoyable was the fact at this early age the boys understood the benefits of team play.
Marr ran out worthy winners 3 -1.
Primary 4: winners Marr (the following may seem like an unbiased report as given by Chick Young when speaking about a certain team from the south side of Glasgow).
The P4 squad performed to their potential with full commitment being shown in teamwork, tenacity and tackling. They had a will and hunger to win, with some exceptional skills – bearing in mind the dreadful conditions where it would have been easier working with a wet bar of soap (this obviously has diddly squat to do the coaches!!!)
Following impressive wins the Marr squad faced Ayr who were performing equally as well.
The final game was a winner takes all affair with both teams eager to be victorious. The commitment and will to win was clearly evident with both teams giving there all. Marr were able to turn pressure into points and this added the impetus for them to fight for every ball with at the end them running out winners (6 – 2) in a score that didn’t reflect the challenge that Ayr posed.
The Marr play was ‘top drawer’ with tackles being made, a hunger to win the ball evident and most importantly a team spirit clearly evident.
Well done – it may be that the coaches are slightly prouder than your parents…thanks to those who turned up t9o support!!!
This squad, if they continue to develop and play to their potential will be hard to beat.
Primary 5: winners – Ayr
The Marr squad worked very hard and were unlucky to be edged out by Ayr in the final of the round robin. The squad show great promise for the future and each player gave 110% with the continued development of skills and teamwork apparent.
The coaches were pleased with the overall performance and the boys clearly understood what they will require to do to take the next step up.
Primary 6: winners – Ayr
Both Marr and Ayr produced some excellent rugby in the early games leaving the situation of a winner takes all final opportunity in the last game where they faced each other.
The Marr team played as this and as such this holds promise for next season when they assume the mantle of senior squad in the mini section. Their tackling and rucking improved as the day progressed and no doubt will soon reach an even higher level.
The ‘final’ game was a closely and evenly matched performance with both teams giving their all.
Ayr finally took advantage and at the end of the game were winners by a score of 1 – 0.
Primary 7: winners – Ayr
It is ironic (and a tad sore) that the Marr squad haven’t lost a match for goodness knows when, and even more so that they’ve not lost a try, however they lost out to Ayr in a final match where the score was nil – nil. Rugby can be somewhat fickle and the result of this section came down to the overall number of tries scored with Ayr winning on the fact that they had scored one more than Marr…well someone has to be the winner. The match between Marr and Ayr was a classic with both teams giving their all. If we’d had a computer and analysis this would have shown Marr having some 80% of the possession and a similar amount of time spent camped near the Ayr line. Ayr though to their credit held firm and ensured that Marr’s effort was to no avail. There was a full blooded effort from both teams with no quarter sought or given. These teams have faced each other for the past 5 years and are a match for each other and it will be interesting to see who they develop as they move to te next level.
A sore one for the Marr squad – but that is what life is about!
Finally a couple of acknowledgements:
Firstly, to two members of the mini section who have given more than their share of commitment to the club. Rab Dalziel and Roy Hughes have for a number of years (not saying how many because both think that they are spring lambs!!!) have been mainstays in the organisation of the mini section and their approach provides a fabulous example to the other coaches. They are moving on (no not eligible for bus passes yet – almost but not yet) to spend their weekends on other pursuits.
Thanks to both for their effort and commitment.
Secondly. Today and lots of other days where we have visitors requires support from a small band of parents (usually mums) who work tirelessly. This weekend was no different and a big thank you to all is given, especially to Lorraine, Andrea, Clair and Anne Marie (apologies if the spelling is awry but everyone will know who you are).
Marr is a very successful club and is held in high regard, especially at mini section. We have a wonderful attitude and approach to ruby both on and off the field and in the latter our hospitality is second to none. Well done to all, especially those who go the extra mile. Your efforts are very much appreciated.
All in all a good day…roll on the next opportunity!!!

Next Wednesday Night at Millbrae (ko 7pm) sees the Ayrshire U18 Development Cup Final where Marr College’s Development XV (essentially the 2nd XV)take on the 1st XV from Carrick Academy. Please try and get along to Ayr to support the match which should be a cracker given two excellent games already between the sides. The Marr sie will essentially be next year’s 1st XV so this is a chance to see the younger talent coming through. The rugby work that has been done at Carrick over the last couple of years has been fantastic and is a shining example of what can be done at a school where rugby has not been the number 1 sport.
Below is an report from the Carrick website so it looks like a big crowd from Maybole is expected. It would be good to match the enthusiasm from this end and make a great rugby occasion.
"Carrick Academy 1st XV will face their biggest challenge of the season against Marr College Development XV in the final of the RBS Ayrshire Development league at Millbrae next Wednesday night. Cup Final fever has hit the school so much so that supporters buses have been organised and a big crowd is expected to cheer on the boys from Maybole. The school have organised a light meal for the boys before hand with former Head Teacher Mr Mike Goodwin and Depute Head Teacher Mr Jim McComiskey attending. A surprise has also been arranged for everybody in the crowd when we arrive at Millbrae but you will have to attend the game to see what that will be!!!
Marr will be difficult opponents for Carrick. The Schools having played each other twice this season with one win apiece and both games were excellent adverts for the RBS Under 18 Ayrshire Development league and everybody will be hoping for a another closely fought match. Marr have a great tradition of rugby and are respected throughout the country and this is credit to the hardwork of the coaches at Marr especially John Sharkey and Alan Wright. However Mr Brown knows that his team are a highly committed group of boys and will give their all. The main aim of the leagues are to encourage the development of rugby in Ayrshire and the showcase event will kick off with Loudoun Academy and Belmont Academy contesting the Under 15 final."

Just to echo Kevin’s words. There is some really good emerging talent coming through and being well supported by the ’old heads’. Today was a real sickener given the manner of the injury time defeat. There was no disgrace in losing to Kilmarnock and they knew they had been in a game. Remember you outscored them 2 tries to 1 and it was only a few years ago when there was 70 odd points difference between the clubs! You’ve come a long way and the future looks bright.
The season isn’t over - there’s three league games left with which to go out on a high - and gain 3rd place in the league. There’s also the sevens circuit where you can really make an impact if you put the effort in at training.
Thanks for the effort today and during the season.

Thanks to Kevin for his encouraging words. The game was decided today by a referee who gave a decision when he had no idea who was offside, if anyone! To quote him ’it was either 9 or 13’ - or any other player in a Marr strip! At the end of the day we have to accept the ref’s decision but it doesn’t mean we have to agree with him!

Heads held high! Today’s result was diappointing. To lose with the final kick of the ball was a touch sore when you consider the effort that had been given over the previous eighty odd minutes. After a cautious start the team began to play with the skill and belief that exists and they had just reward with some well worked scores. Unfortunately the rub of the green wasn’t with us and last or missed passes let everyone down. Despite the score, for those at the sidelines there was the pleasure of watching some of our next generation begining the road to maturity. And, based on what we so there is a silver lining ahead. The mixture of old heads or lags with the blossomimg of youth leaves us with continued hope and happiness that Marr will continue to flourish with the spirit of rugby at the core. Well done to the 1st xv - you deserve to keep your heads held high. The journey over the last few years has been to quote the song "...a long and winding road..." but based on what we’ve seen, especially over the past few matches we are on a good course. As we look to the future we need to continue to blood some newbies but the old heads still give 110% and their experience and contribution will add value to the future. Well done and thankyou - despite some of the results going against us- for providing a great deal of enjoyment on elsewise dreich Saturday afternoons.

Thanks for the info on entertainment for the boys. Is it far from our hotel do you know to these places? I see you are looking for a tour for the Senior side, have you considered N.Ireland, Derry in particular!! We have a great club who will give you a game at any level any time and we are easy to get to, flights to City of Derry airport from Glasgow Prestwick 1 pence with Ryan Air. Airport is 4 miles from rugby club and good Best western hotel, also only 7 miles from City. We have various good hotels in City, one of which sponsor us and give us good rates. I can sort out all on this side if you want, i will be at Marr for the weekend of the 12/13 April and can discuss with whoever then. If you are interested we hold a Golden Oldies Tournament each year on the first Bank Hloiday in May (3/4 th this year), we have had teams from USA, Germany and England attending in previous years along with a team of ex Irish International from Limerick called the Limerick Leprechauns (Brian Spillane, Peter Clohessy etc). This year we have teams from England, Wales and Southern Ireland confirmed, it would be great to get a Scottish team to make it a Home Nations occasion!!! Feel free to contact me on 07739979262.

Spain is a good option with flights to Gerona, Reus, Murcia and soon apparently Granada from Prestwick.
The North of Spain (Barcelona) and the East (Valencia) tend to be the stronger rugby areas and quite popular for tours. I have played in Valencia, Elche, Murcia and Villajoyosa and the hospitality is excellent although the smaller clubs pitches tended to be a bit dry in May!!
One thing to remember about travelling around six nations time is that some clubs did this, this year and were unable to fulfill cup fixtures with a resultant two year ban.

********* SENIOR TOUR 2009 **********
A bit more detail on the suggested destinations:-
France - This is a good option because there are so many flights from Prestwick to Paris that we could probably get there for a reasonable price. It is only a short flight, and we could get a game easily. Also we have the option of going to the France v Scotland six nations match. Paris would be an excellent weekend.
Wales - The Welsh hospitality is a strong draw for a tour. One option is to travel by coach, taking in a few destinations en route - The Valley’s ? Swansea ? Cardiff ? A big advantage with this idea is that we cut out the nightmare of booking flights (and trying not to get chucked off flights). We could easily arrange a fixture in Wales, and as the Scotland v Wales fixture is at Murrayfield next year we would be a bit of a novelty for the locals.
Spain - This is the Wildcard. More of a Latvia type option, but not quite so dangerous. We could probably arrange a fixture and get decent flights. A plus point for Spain is, we could book this tour closer to the summer when it is getting hot and hit the beach.
Any thoughts ?????????????

********* SENIOR TOUR 2009 **********
From all the suggestions for a tour so far, the 3 realistic options are France, Wales, and Spain.
These options are realistic because of the likleyhood of getting a match, the small amount of time people would need off work, the costs of getting there, and the logistics of getting there.
Can we see some votes for the various options ?

There seems to be enough interest in a sevens squad - it would be great to see that squad given the same backup that the 1st XV enjoys - Coaching, a medic, some travelling support, help with transport, and fixtures advertised.
In agreement with recent posts, if everyone buys into the the concept, we can put together a Marr Sevens Squad that can do serious damage - and not just to buses !
Posted by: allanmack [ March 5th 2008, 18:56:17 ]
Agree Marrman. I have been embarrassed to pull from tournaments a few times over the last couple of years when after accepting tournaments we had a few players who, despite agreeing to play in the tournaments, decided at the last minute that they ’couldn’t be bothered’.
The fact is that we have the makings of a couple of excellent sevens sides if people are prepared to train and put in the effort.
Posted by: Marrman [ March 5th 2008, 14:23:18 ]
Agree with what everyone’s saying re the 7’s but what we need for the 7’s is a squad that are prepared to go to all the tournaments that we enter regardless of where they are & what the squad have been doing the night before. Not just selecting what tournaments they fancy going to...

Two matches this Saturday, 1st March, both at home.
1st XV V Ross High in the Shield.
2nd XV V Cumbernauld in the league.
Both games will kick off at 2.00pm (Ross Hight o confirm but Cumbernauld ok)to allow an early finish so that the clubhouse can be cleared a wee bit earlier for a 70th Birthday party at night. Your assistance in helping the bar staff clear and clean the place for the function would be really appreciated.
John S, can you inform refs of 2pm kick-offs?
Also, both myself and Tom Irvine are away this week and next weekend so we need someone to finalise fixtures in the event of weather causing postponements and also to ensure pitches are lined etc. Any volunteers?

Easter Holiday Rugby Sessions.
South Ayrshire are holding their Annual Rugby Holiday sessions during Easter and Kyle was due to run a two / three day event for 6-14 year olds during this period.
As Kyle is no longer hear we need suitbaly qualified coach volunteers (Foundation +) to run this event in second week of April. We probably need at least two caches a day to take sessions from 10 until 1. It could be worth upwards of £500 to the club as South Ayrshire pay for the volunteers time.
If anyone can spare the time to keep the kids ticking over during easter then leave a message here.

I would just like to put the record straight as far as the catering at the Club is concerned. Snacks (sandwiches/baguettes on match days) behind the bar - 50p profit on each sandwich goes to the club and "contrary" to opinion and rumour they WERE selling....anyway - elementary now as they ain’t there anymore. Food sold from the kitchen during the World Cup games ie Stovies, Chips & Cheese etc - all bought by me, prepared by me, cooked by me. Everything from sauces, forks, containers, etc sold on at profit and loss basis. ie nothing sold?...still no cost to the club and no wages paid by the Club. FAREDEAL?? Sponsored lunches, buffets etc - Profit to the Club! Private Functions that I cater for - £2.00 per head goes to the Club and there is no preparation or work involved at all for the Club and all my staff on the night are paid for by me. Anything I have ever done in the past 32 years has always been for the good of Marr Rugby/T & D Sports Club.....I ain’t gonna change now folks!!!!!

Robert,
Thanks for your support. Ironically we are actually generating the most income the club has seen ever with a good level of subs, programme sponsorship, lunches, dinners and raffles. The challenge has been that we continued with the Club Development Manager position after the key sponsor had to pull out a couple of seasons ago and although it has ceratinly been a boost in terms of on field success it has left us very low on funds with the result there has been no investment in the clubhouse. As we are not reinvesting in the position for the forseeable future the cash situation should ease provided we keep up the money generation actvities. I hope to be working to support John Irvine next season t progress the community sports facility work once I stand down from the President’s position in May.
Posted by: Robert Clark [ February 4th 2008, 22:46:23 ]
Alan, Thanks for the very comprehensive reply, dont know how long it took you to type but took me ages to read !!!!! I agree that the principle is sound just a pity the other member clubs dont use the facilities as much as the rugby members. As for Mr Irvine i am aware of the sterling work this man has done regarding the community facility ( i was breifly involved with troon thistle before my son discovered rugby) He has put so much effort into it.
Personaly i feel we are in a catch 22 situation as no doubt the clubhouse needs updating but to do that we need cash and we cant attract new customers because of the current state of the clubhouse. Competing against pubs in the town which are more modern is always going to be tough.
here’s hoping the shop eventually sell me the winning ticket for the lottery , i ask for it every week and they sell me a dummy!!!
Posted by: allanmack [ February 4th 2008, 10:30:25 ]
Robert,
To give you some background:
Troon Sports Club was set up about six years ago when the clubs using Fullarton at that time ( Marr RFC, Troon Amateurs FC)were struggling to grow their clubs whilst maintaining efficient running of the clubhouse. The aims of the Sports Club were:
1. To focus solely on running an efficient and profitable clubhouse that met the needs of its consitituent clubs. The aim was to run a profitable bar operation that would mean that the clubhouse was self-sustaininable and the clubs could plough their income into growing their respective sports instead of propping up the clubhouse operation.
2. To work towards a larger community sports club for the people of Troon and Prestwick based on extended premises and grounds at Fullarton. The plan was (and is some ways, still is) to extend into the Co-operative fields next door to the present pitches.
3. To atract other sports to the Fullarton grounds.
4. To be the catalyst and supporting body as regards grant (eg. lottery) applications.
To date the Sports Club has not succeeded. The same old problem with too few people coming forward and taking up the positions required to achieve the above aims. Where people have come forward they have come as representatives of the constituent clubs ( Rugby, Football and Petanque)and the majority have had positions within the constituent club’s committee so there is a pressure on time and on the needs of the constituent club. The Sports Club have been constantly firefighting as regards the clubhouse with the result that no long term actions have materialised. To be fair, they have had their hands tied due to work being done by Troon Thistle’s John Irvine who has been working tirelessly behind the scenes as regards new community playing facilities.
Despite various bar initiatives (franchise operation, full time bar manager)the bar has not lived up to expectations due to poor section usage. This is due to poor facilities and very low usage by football and petanque. These clubs pay their rental on time but ’old habits’ die hard and as football is not the most sociable of sports then visiting clubs simply disappear after the matches as do the home teams. The petanquers have the odd function but that is it.
Where does the sports club go now? The principle is sound but without an increase of committee members and members that are not ’sucked into’ a constituent club then I am not sure if it has a future.

I have been watching the latest line of chat here recently and would have to agree with most of the sentiments. please excuse my ignorance when i ask, Is the clubhouse not run by Troon and District sports club and if so who are the member clubs ? Obviously the 3 rugby sections and also troon amatures but any others? it seems that all the effort that goes into the clubhouse is done by Rugby Club members with no assistance from any other member clubs, surely this is not fair as they will all use the facilities. As for the question regarding moving the minis to a Sunday in my own opinion the reason the minis are so successful is due to the amount of rugby they get at our club, training on Saturday ( Tuesday also for P6&7 )and games on Sunday. a whole weekend of Rugby, practise makes perfect ;-)

Another excellent effort today by Timmy and co. behind the bar and in the kitchen. Serving up some quality hot food and making good cash for the club. Lets see a snack menu on offer every week - would be a great wee money spinner.
Pity about the half-cooked nonsense the Scotland team gave us against France.

Apologies for the phrase "pointless chitter chatter". I completely agree this site is valuable in getting ideas and support for the club, as it was proven yesterday! Come on Scotland!!!!

Yep...much more like it!...well done to C&S in the bar an kitchen...looking forward to the game today...
ps...danger mouse...its the pointless chitter chatter that is getting points of view and, subsequently, ideas and their support, out there....long may it continue...(16 new onliine registrarions this week...compared to 1 the previous)
great to see the kithchen being used for the clubs benefit!

Great to hear that the support was out in force yesterday. I am sure it will be the same today and for all the matches big, small, rugby, football, golf etc which will be shown at the club.
A point to note for the 1sts. Loch Lomond beat McLaren 33-0 in the cup yesterday (how that game went ahead I’ll never know!) so its an away match at Loch Lomond in the Cup next Saturday Feb 9. What time do you want kick off given that the Wales v Scotland game kicks off at 2pm?

Excellent day at the club today watching the 6 nations on the new big screen. Great atmosphere and also a good bit of cash made over the bar, selling the bonus ball, and the £2 for a pie & raffle.
LETS GET IT TWICE AS BUSY FOR THE SCOTLAND MATCH TODAY !!!

WENT TO THE CLUB TODAY AND AS ALWAYS HAD A GOOD TIME. GETTING THE BIG SCREEN BACK MAKES SUCH A DIFFERENCE IN TERMS OF ATMOSPHERE AND ATTENDANCE. PEOPLE DONT GO TO THE CLUB FOR A PIE OR A DRAW IN THE RAFFLE, THEY GO THERE TO SHOW AND OFFER THEIR SUPPORT IN ALL THAT THE CLUB STANDS FOR.
THE BAR STAFF PUT ON AN ARRAY OF HOT FOOD WHICH WENT DOWN WELL WITH ALL THOSE THERE. ALL IN ALL THINGS ARE LOOKING BETTER AND DARE I SAY PROMISING.
LETS STOP WITH ALL THIS POINTLESS CHITTER CHATTER AND GET UP TO THE CLUB AND START SUPPORTING IT!!
IN REGARDS TO NEW YEAR :- IF EVERYONE WERE TO HAVE THAT ATTITUDE THEN THE CLUB WOULD BE EMPTY. PEOPLE NEED TO SUPPORT THESE EVENTS IN ORDER TO ACCUMULATE MONEY TO PROVIDE BIGGER AND BETTER EVENTS IN THE FUTURE AND SO ON ..... THE CLUB OBVIOUSLY MEANS A LOT TO MANY SO ITS TIME TO PROVE IT AND SHOW YOUR SUPPPORT WHERE ITS NEEDED, ON AND OFF THE PITCH.
ON A LIGHTER NOTE, WHAT A GREAT GAME TODAY! BRING ON FRANCE, HOPE TO SEE THE CLUB FULL TOMORROW AGAIN.

Folks, I fail to see how a pie would entice me into a cold club to watch the internationals. If you sell raffle tickets at half time, people will inevitably pay more than £1 to buy tickets and therefore make more money from the raffles alone. Put on decent food at a reasonable price like during the World Cup and it does not cost the club anything and they are not charged for any wastage. When and how did this change. Why fix something that is not broken when we should be looking at ways forward, not steps backwards. We all need to start working together in this club, rather than pulling in different directions, or we will get nowhere fast...The good of the club is, or should be, foremost in everyone’s minds, and therefore sitting down and getting some ideas together and people to support them, and not just a group of two or three people doing it all. It all makes for better relations, and lets face it, we all are wanting the club to succeed on and off the park, but that is not going to happen unless we all start talking to one another. Let the bar staff concentrate on running the bar and others should be working on fundraising ideas etc. No offence to the bar staff intended!

I agree that it would be ideal to have the option of Fullarton or College fields but as we know the problem is finance .To try and manage both facilities properly would be a very expensive undertaking. If the club moved to College fields and the grounds were properly maintained I do not think there would be a problem.
Posted by: allanmack [ February 2nd 2008, 09:24:13 ]
Moving Minis to a Sunday is an option but again given our experience of over-use of Fullarton it would be better to have the Fullarton and College Field option. The Saturday minis (despite being at odds with most clubs who play on a Sunday)has been a success and my understanding there has always been a reluctance to move to a Sunday. Anyone from the minis got a view?
As regrds food for the seniors not sure it comes down to cash but lack of support. A big bowl of broth plus a pie would do the trick.

Just to clarify the fact that I am not having a go at the bar staff , who do their best with the budget provided . More people need to offer assistance after matches at least for the first hour but unfortunately it does not happen. Thanks for clarifying the six nations situation, another suggestion would be to offer a raffle ticket for a free draw when a drink is bought. I think a bit of speculation is required in order to attract more regular customers, who will in turn boost the profits.

They did get their jugs as i had them poured and ready for them coming in. The 2ndxv bought jugs( M Underwood) but as they were going to massive that night they gave what they didnt finish to the 1stxv through back bar. (egg man) I didnt pour any jugs for the 1stxv.
regds food. yes i agree it should be better especially if their travelling from afar. point taken. will try and sort something out for nxt few hme games.
snipes i see what your saying. im just going with what ive been asked to do. if it doesnt work this weekend we can try a different approach.
regds sat hme games. would it be better to make back bar players lounge while away teams are here. food could be served through hatch and jugs could be ready and waiting for your consumption.
see you all tmrw.

I’m pretty sure that I saw the Madras guys through in the back bar with jugs. The food for the opposition is a fair point though & it’s in no way a reflection on any of the bar staff as I’m sure it all comes down to dosh that we just don’t have, but the standard of the pies is pretty poor. I should add that they are served up with a smile & a friendly word, but it’s not what I’d be looking for if I’d just played rugby in cold conditions & was then getting on a bus to the other end of the country.

I certainly did not see any jugs on saturday at the club for Madras or Marr and no money was collected from the 1st 15 so if they wer provided I do not know who paid for them. In relation to the mini rugby they could move training to a Sunday and if the club move there would need to be some sort of agreement drawn up in conjunction with the Marr Trust.
Posted by: allanmack [ January 31st 2008, 22:38:03 ]
Snips,
Just to clarify. The reason for keeping the Fullarton pitches was to ensure greater playing area for all sections. The minis train on a Saturday morning when College Fields are in full use so they will need the space. If College Fields are used on both a Saturday morning and afternoon then it would be advisable to have a back up in Fullarton for Sunday matches. It would be great to have a facility that was ’all in one’ but as the College will always have first call on the pitches at College Fields (decree from Marr Trust)then the extra land must be kept.Remember College Fields is multi-sport and hockey will always be a big sport there so no extra rugby pitches will be accommodated especially if an all weather and a new clubhouse is built.
As regards your other comments re the bar I agree with you and I am disappointed that we allegedly did not return the hospitality offered to us in St. Andrews although Timmy does say that they did get their jugs. What’s the actual story?
Posted by: snips [ January 31st 2008, 22:35:37 ]
Would it not be a better idea to offer free half time snacks and a free ticket for the first try scorer to the first 15 people who arrive. Or something similar? Maybe that would get more people to attend.
Posted by: Tim Graham [ January 31st 2008, 22:17:29 ]
Think youve got the wrong end of the stick. It’s not £2 to get in, if you want a pie at half time and be entered into the raffle for a btl of spirits this will cost £2 if you enter. There is no entrance fee for any games during the six nations.
All moies made through the raffle and bonus ball and Martys 1st try scorer will go toward keeping the projector and getting sky in.
Madras and accies got jugs of beer on saturday. I should know I poured them.
Leeds, the beer lines get cleaned every friday without fail. we were actually complimented on how good the beer tastes on saturday.
We behind the bar are doing our best to give you guys what you want.
Lets hve a good six nations on the pitch and off it, cheers

I must be missing something. All the matches are on BBC1 which everyone can access for no extra charge - whether it’s in a pub or their own house! I still think the idea of charging people to get in is a bad one but time will tell.
Posted by: snips [ January 31st 2008, 20:25:52 ]
Having read the previous emails about the bar, it would advisable to make visiting teams feel more welcome when they come to Marr - especially when they travel by coach. On Saturday, Madras travelled to Troon, were given basic food and not a jug of beer in sight! We were treated very well at Madras and this hospitality was not reciprocated last week, which led to them leaving about 30 mins after the end of the match and spending no money behind the bar. To expect people to use the bar, it’s essential to make them feel welcome!
Regarding New Year’s Day, the bar was cold, there was no music or entertainment - in short, nothing to entice people to celebrate at the club, let alone keep them there if they did arrive.
On the subject of the six nations matches and the suggestions that members pay £2 to watch a game which can be seen anywhere else in the town free!! It’s hardly good sense to pay £3 each way for a taxi and then £2 to get in when you could get the same entertainment in the town. We have to offer people something to get them to come -not expect them to have to pay to come to a club for which they already pay a membership!
The move to the college fields is in fact a good suggestion, marred by the idea that the present clubhouse and pitches are kept for youth rugby. The reasons for moving would primarily be financial so why spend more money keeping a clubhouse open which we can ill afford at the moment. To separate youth rugby from senior rugby is in absolute contradiction of everything the club has been supposedly working towards over the past few years. Not to mention the work required on the drainage to get the pitches to an acceptable standard!

Can we not go down the route of a Bar Convenor again for the moment until we are in a position to hire and pay a Club Manager! I am sure a word in a few of the right ears by the right people could drum someone up. We need to also start the ball rolling with regular functions within the club, that will appeal to all areas of members....something simple like a Race Night to get some money in the Pot to allow us to start booking bands etc. Antoher thing we need, an there is no work involved in it....is donations for raffles during the International season. That way we can make more money from them. Please give generously....even if it is a cheap bottle of plonk or whiskey...Just leave them behind the bar with a sticker on them saying "raffle donation"...and remember folks, any member is entitled to sit in at the management meeting and air their views, or speak to a member of management team on match days.

Serevi,
No argument with the bar manager/ess argument. That’s why Linda was employed - perhaps she was not the right person in hindsight however she did a good job in difficult circumstances and managed to raise the bar turnover to over £100,000 once again. However, thee were times when we couldn’t even pay her wages due to the expense of running the clubhouse and the fact that the club was dead during the week and in the summer. So the question begs, how do you actually employ a bar manager/ess when you cannot guarantee their wages. In order for that bar to actually make a profit after all wages / expenses a number of thngs have to happen.
1. A huge cash investment to bring the building up to standard in order that it is a comfortable place to visit and socialise.
2. A full time club manager to run the bar, building and work on sponsorship / fundraising outside bar hours.
3. The membership to utilise the facilities more and ensure that all sections hold more vents there. An open licence would help.
The club’s financial problems are rearing their ugly head once again due to the decision to continue to go down the club development manager route after the sponsorship ran out. This cost the club a lot of money and although it brought tremendous success, the monies generated through the various functions that were put in place (lunches, programme advertising, Annual Dinner, Xmas Raffle, 200 Club) have not been as supported as was hoped.
Another point to note is that we have kept subscriptions lowish due to ’demand’ and we have the lowest playing subs in Scottish Rugby. Where most clubs are now charging £10 a month to players (some with match fees , some without) we charged £35 a year which is too low.
All in all, in order to move the club forward a massive investment is needed in new facilities and in my opinion a move away from Fullarton to College Fields, although I would keep the pitches at Fullarton and simply have a changing rooms / tea room facility for mini rugby and youth football.
In the meantime, more support through the clubhouse means more money to pay bills and employ, not just a bar manager but a club manager. Without the support - its a non starter - unless the lottery / bingo comes up.
PS. The New Year’s Day party was very disappointing in terms of numbers and although there were more than 15 ( 25 when I was there) it was way short of the 100 odd over the last few years. Why? It was advertised over the website, in the match programmes and in e-mails to the 300 odd e-mail list and although more could have been done (again lack of numbers to do the work)you would have thought the people who raved about it the previous year would have passed the word and turned up. Strange.

No disrespect was meant to any of the clubs volunteers. They all do an excellent job in very difficult circumstances, and as Alan says they are the the lifeblood of the club.
That said, I still think the only way forward for the bar operation is a Qualified Bar Manager/ess.
If we get the right person and give them sufficient incentives, they will maximise the profit.
A good manager would be expected to organise all the products and services needed to make the bar operation a success. This would be a help to the committee rather than a hinderence.
What is the alternative - there were about 15 people at the New Year’s Day Party - is that the way forward ?

Fair play to the recent input by leed & serevi regarding the current problems at the club. Leed’s idea of £2 enrty and a free pie for all the 6 nations matches is a cracker. please get it organised, who knows maybe the fat blokes like me will pay in twice for an extra free pie. The item on club standards was right we should expect clean toilets kitchens and changing rooms, bogroll holders and bulbs in the ladies loo as a minimum standard, but has anyone asked the guy charged with sorting out these issues if he could do with a hand. Shame on the current committee members for not having enough of a life to have free time to serve the club, or maybe they just prioritise the club higher up the list than the wife and weans. But more shame on you guys if, as you say, you have "a lack of confidence in its methods" but don’t have the gumption to come forward and help change it. The current committee are constantly firefighting and in trying to keep the club afloat Allan Archie Jim and the others have had their fingers in that many dykes they are thinking of joining that wee Dutch guy Peter in Lesbos. Seriously its your club if no-one wants to step up and assist with the problems then its just another case of bumping your gums.

Last year four people bothered to attend the Sports Club AGM, and they were all on the committee, as a show of interest and support it was pathetic. There is a right time and place to criticise the operation of the club and the committee so hopefully some of you with the opinions will attend this year and assist in the thankless task of trying to keep the club functioning. Good News...!...but it wasnt ever only the screen!
I’ll get the TV schedule posted here...
Get some promos / pies etc in the pipeline and they will come.
A few posters around club/town would be good.
Get the chalk board up to date.
Does anyone know anyone that wants to sponsor the matches?, either individually (lots of work) or one company to sponsor the whole tournament.
I can produce banners etc to go above (or digitally on..) the screen.
It needs effort more akin to what Jonny & Mark did for the tourneys that were jammed.
Cheers

I have heard today that the big screen will be reinstalled in time for next weekend's 6N Nations. Let's use it and make sure it is not just a '6 Nations Wonder'.
Given previous comments I am looking forward to hearing that every big match, whether it is rugby, football, golf or tiddly winks is a 'sell out'. Once the crowds come back I am sure that the Sports Club will be in a financial position to increase investment in the bar and the associated services.

Spot on...and well said Serevi...
Irrespective of any other events that occured back then, the only time the bar has been even remotely successful was when it was a going interest for those putting in the effort.
Chris & co are doing admirably considering the restrictions and compromises that are being and have been made with regards to service, quality and availability.
There was a time very recently when people from all over troon were making the effort to get to the club whether there was televised sport or rugby matches or even on a dull tuesday night...WHY? because the club offered a decent, professional product to punters.
Today i witnessed a visiting supporter, after standing out in the rain for an hour and a half, take a sip of his pint (lager i think, although it may as well have been cider...) and screw his face up...he passed it around his pals before shaking his he
