Kick-Off 14:00

Sunday saw Marr under 16 travel south (yes again!) to take on Wigtonshire in the new revised West 2A South version of the league. It’s a long story and it’s not over yet.

The conditions were somewhat blustery to say the least when the 16’s arrived in Stranraer. We opted to take the wind at our backs in the first half to give us the early advantage. Both teams lined up for the kick-off which Wigtonshire duly took. From the first breakdown on half-way, wing-forward for the day, Tony Boyd picked the ball up, cut through the heart of the opposition to score between the posts. Converted by Adair.

Wigtonshire restarted. Kicking possession back to Marr but a knock on from the receiver led to the first scrum of the day around half-way. Wigtonshire retained their own ball at the scrum but a series of handling errors from their backs and some terrier-like scavenging from the newly converted Boyd led to his second try of the day. Adair added the conversion.

The next four tries came just as quick with the initial pressure caused by good quick movement in the forwards; clearing out, a pick-up from No.8 Munro and some good interplay before linking with the backs to provide tries for Boyd Mill and 2 for Scott. A short period of defending with some good tackling provided turnover ball and the opportunity for counter attack by Marr from deep in their own half, finished by McMaster.

The next ten minutes saw another salvo of three tries from, out of position, Boyd who displayed some jinks and body swerves only seen before in the film the Matrix. The excitement must have been too much for kicker elect Adair to take as he missed his first conversion of the day. 9 out of 10 so far, for those of you who have lost count.

The second half followed much the same tempo as the first with some excellent handling displayed giving the wingers McMaster and Scott, and No.8 Munro a try each. 1 converted by Adair with a further 1 out of 2 converted by Marshall.

Rae then got his chance to shine with a quick tap penalty move 10 yards from the opposition line. Although wind resistance caused most of his trouble he was able to dive, in a manner not dissimilar to a shot down Hercules, to stake his place on the score sheet.

The match would not have been complete without another from Boyd fed with quick ball after full back Millar made a surging run down the right wing before snagged only by the last tackle.

Boyd’s thunder was in the end stolen firstly by Mill who cut through the defence for his second of the day and then by a typically wide move from the backs to feed Deary, now stationed on the wing from his earlier start at 9, who scored in the corner. Deary’s half hearted attempt to drop kick his own conversion being unsuccessful putting his kicking performance for the day to 100% fail. In no comparison to Adair who successfully slotted 12 out of 14 kicks in what were extremely difficult and blustery conditions.

More a list than a match report but an articulate and descriptive account of 111-0 points would resemble a copy of War and Peace so that all you getting. Hopefully next weeks game will provide more of a challenge in the lead up to our last 16 clash away to Boroughmuir on 25th October. Watch this space for details.
