View from the touchline: East Kilbride RFC 11 Marr Rugby 12 A win’s a win for a’ that! The mesmeric effect of watching a real fire is almost on a par with watching two teams wanting and able to play rugby in good conditions. Marr’s visit today to East Kilbride offered one out of three. At this early stage of the season the going at Calderglen would be at best described as heavy and it is little wonder that East Kilbride are keen advocates of summer rugby. With enforced changes Marr’s starting line-up saw Kurt Davies and Nathan Murray join the squad and make their first starts of the season. Marr started brightly enough, but our backs found the conditions challenging and were unable to make the most of several good opportunities and we had to rely on Rory McGee’s reliable boot to establish a six point lead from two penalty conversions before he had to retire injured after 20 minutes. He was replaced by Gregor Ness who took the opportunity to claim his stake as link man at half back. East Kilbride relied upon playing to their strengths and Marr showed great strength of character to continue trying to play rugby. Just before half time one of the few East Kilbride sorties into Marr territory allowed them to gain a penalty advantage which they slotted home. Four minutes into the second half Marr stretched their lead, when Gregor Ness successfully converted a penalty. Marr spent the next twenty or so minutes trying valiantly to find a way to East Kilbride’s try line but to no avail. At the end of the period East Kilbride had one chance and to their great credit they made the most of it. Marr conceded a penalty; East Kilbride kicked for the corner and from the resulting line-out scored a try off a catch and drive. It wasn’t converted to leave the score with Marr having a single point advantage. Spurred on, East Kilbride started to play rugby and got their reward within five minutes when Marr were again adjudged to have infringed and a penalty kick saw East Kilbride claim the lead, much to the home support’s surprise and delight. Marr supporters know that this season we have very much followed the view that the show isn’t over until the final whistle and yet again our troops rallied and gave it their all. Justifiably as the clock approach full time we were rewarded with a kickable penalty and Gregor Ness showed nerves of steel to slot home and give Marr a one point advantage. East Kilbride ended the match with a flurry and Marr conceded a penalty – one of few during the whole eighty minutes. East Kilbride kicked towards the corner intent on making the most of their put in from the lineout. Marr though were intent on finishing the game and a great steal by Kris Kirk allowed Marr to gain possession. In desperation East Kilbride infringed and from the resultant penalty it was an easy decision for captain, Stephen Adair to point to the touchline, and as the ball crossed the referee blew for time up. For Marr, a valuable lesson and more so four valuable points. Marr’s forwards, the starting eight and the two replacements Robert Kennedy and Craig Steele made a fair old impact. Steelie in particular lived true to his name and more often than not, in a contact situation emerged with the ball. A towsy affair, but a just ending. The future remains bright...
